Job Description and Duties

Effective July 1, 2025, in accordance with the applicable Memorandum of Understanding, the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025) was implemented in response to the status of the State budget. PLP 2025 requires each full-time employee in Bargaining Unit 19 and related Excluded, Exempt and Statutory Exempt employees, will have their base salary reduced by 3 percent and will receive 5 PLP 2025 leave credits monthly through June 2027. Salaries do not reflect the recent changes. Part-time employees are subject to the same conditions as full-time employees, on a prorated basis equivalent to their time-base. Permanent intermittent employees are subject to the same condition as full-time employees, based on the number of hours worked in the pay period.

About the Role

The incumbent serves as the designated mental health clinician on the institution’s Crisis Intervention Team (CIT), an interdisciplinary team established pursuant to departmental policy. The incumbent provides emergent, in-person crisis assessment and intervention services to patients experiencing acute psychiatric distress, including suicidal ideation, self-injurious behavior, psychosis, severe mood or anxiety symptoms, trauma-related symptoms, and behavioral decompensation, as close to the patient’s housing unit as operationally feasible, in collaboration with nursing and custody supervisory staff and in consultation with psychiatry. The incumbent exercises independent clinical judgment under strict regulatory timelines, including during operating hours when no clinical supervisor is available on-site. Accordingly, the incumbent must possess and maintain a valid, current license as a Psychologist issued by the California Board of Psychology at the time of appointment. The incumbent’s clinical decisions, risk assessments, and documentation are subject to review under the supervisory, quality management, and other monitoring processes.

Qualifications

• Must possess and maintain a valid, current license as a Psychologist issued by the California Board of Psychology at the time of appointment.
• Must have experience working with individuals in correctional settings.
• Must have experience conducting crisis assessments and interventions.
• Must have experience collaborating with nursing and custody supervisory staff.
• Must have experience in providing in-person crisis assessment and intervention services.
• Must have experience in providing emergency mental health services.

Skills

• Strong clinical skills in crisis intervention and mental health assessment.
• Ability to work independently under strict regulatory timelines.
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
• Knowledge of California state laws and regulations regarding mental health and corrections.

Recruitment and Retention Bonus may be available for clinicians newly hired with California Correctional Health Care Services. Please note: Individuals may be eligible to receive a $10,000 one-time recruitment and retention stipend should they meet the eligibility criteria, including but not limited to remaining employed with CCHCS for six months. Additionally, individuals may be eligible to receive a monthly recruitment and retention differential during their first year with CCHCS (totaling $20,000), should they meet the eligibility criteria.

Pay

This classification is subject to Section 5, Hiring-Above-Minimum (HAM) Authorization of the California State Civil Service Pay Scales. The authorized HAM rate for this classification is: P $11,496, Q $13,937.
