Creative Exchange Art Instructor

About the Role

Grounded in the Liberal Arts tradition, the College of Staten Island is committed to the highest standards in teaching, research, and scholarship. The Office of Community Educational Engagement (OCEE) connects the college and community through academic programs, supportive learning communities, and collaborations. OCEE’s Creative Exchange is a community inclusion program serving adults over 21 with mild to moderate intellectual and developmental disabilities, providing skills training and unique learning experiences for personal growth and self-empowerment.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and implement a modified art course across two, 45-minute periods based on the provided course description.
  • Ensure lessons offer engaging, hands-on learning experiences.
  • Incorporate strategies to help students reach their self-identified goals in lesson planning.
  • Adjust instruction based on student feedback and performance.
  • Participate in meetings and professional development as required.
  • Maintain a safe classroom environment with mutual respect and upheld student rights.
  • Submit daily attendance and Student Ratings in a timely manner.
  • Plan and feature a student-centered end-of-semester project, activity, performance, or presentation during Showcase Week.
  • Guide undergraduate students supporting the classes as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree required.
  • Working knowledge of various disabilities.
  • Excellent communication (written, verbal, and interpersonal) skills, including conflict mediation.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and proactively with colleagues.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills.
  • Highly motivated, flexible, and creative.
  • Experience teaching adults with intellectual disabilities and Universal Design training preferred.

Course Description

Art Studio: Explore, Create & Express

Discover your creativity in a welcoming college art studio at CSI! This hands-on course allows students to explore artistic techniques and mediums, including drawing, painting, collage, and other creative projects. Each class encourages experimentation, skill-building, and self-expression through color, texture, design, and imagination. Students will showcase their artwork at the end-of-year Student Art Showcase in May and a special Opening Reception in June, where their work will be displayed on campus for faculty, staff, friends, and family. No previous art experience is necessary—just bring your creativity and imagination!

$40.45/hour
