GED Instructor in Creative Exchange

Schedule: Mon–Thurs, 6:15 pm – 8:15 pm, in person

About the Role

Grounded in the Liberal Arts tradition, the College of Staten Island is committed to the highest standards in teaching, research, and scholarship. The Office of Community Educational Engagement (OCEE) connects the college and community, preparing students to thrive through academic programs, supportive learning communities, and collaborations. The Creative Exchange program serves adults over 21 with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), providing skills training and unique learning experiences for personal growth and self-empowerment.

The instructor will report to the Director of Community Educational Engagement and plan and teach 2–4 modified GED courses (45 minutes each) for adults with IDD.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and implement lessons that offer engaging learning experiences based on course goals
  • Ensure hands-on activities are incorporated where appropriate
  • Adjust lesson planning and instruction based on student needs, feedback, and performance
  • Participate in meetings and professional development as required
  • Ensure a safe classroom environment with mutual respect and upheld student rights
  • Submit daily attendance records using the provided template
  • Complete and submit Student Ratings at the end of the semester based on attendance
  • Plan and feature a student-centered end-of-semester project, activity, performance, or presentation during Showcase Week
  • Guide CSI undergraduate students supporting the classes as needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s preferred
  • Training and experience with universal design preferred
  • Working knowledge of various disabilities
  • Excellent communication (written, verbal, and interpersonal) skills, including conflict mediation
  • Ability to work collaboratively and proactively with colleagues
  • Strong time management and organizational skills
  • Highly motivated, flexible, and creative
  • Experience teaching adults, with adult education training preferred

$40.45/hour
