This is an International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 1245 represented classification subject to collective bargaining. The starting wage rate for this position is $68.56 per hour, based on skills, education, licenses, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity.

About the Role

The Crane Surveyor in Training specializes in hydraulic and electronic over hydraulic control systems and performs inspection and/or repairs to cranes used in lifting service, as well as all types of vehicles, construction equipment, and appurtenances. This journey-level position requires professional mechanics with a solid knowledge and background in a wide variety of mechanical skills, including mobile hydraulics, aerial hydraulics, OSHA boom inspections, CHP BIT Inspections, air brakes, electrical and electronic systems, and diesel/gasoline-powered vehicles. The role involves preparing Estimate for Repair or Replacement forms, recommending payment of invoices, and initiating claims and adjustments.

This position is DOT-covered and subject to random drug and/or alcohol screening. Individuals must be able to travel and transfer to new headquarters throughout the PG&E service territory as needed. The role is headquartered in Santa Maria, with potential relocation based on business needs.

Training will be provided to perform inspections on crane equipment within a 3-year training period. The Crane Surveyor in Training must demonstrate knowledge and ability to complete inspections and pass an OSHA Crane Surveyor examination within 36 months of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct visual, auditory, and operational inspections of vehicles and equipment to identify and troubleshoot problems; research issues using repair manuals, schematics, OEMs, and service bulletins.
  • Inspect vehicles or equipment being assembled, fabricated, or repaired to ensure compliance with company and manufacturer specifications.
  • Prepare Estimate for Repair or Replacement forms (or equivalent).
  • Perform inspection and/or repairs to cranes, vehicles, construction equipment, and appurtenances, including hydraulic and electrical circuits and devices.
  • Operate all types of vehicles and construction equipment and train other employees on proper usage.
  • Recommend payment of invoices and initiate claims and adjustments.
  • Use hand tools and power tools to disassemble, access, and reassemble equipment or components; remove and replace broken or worn parts (e.g., cylinders, brakes, gaskets); perform electrical repairs.

Requirements

  • Valid California Driver’s License by day one of hire.
  • Valid Class A Driver’s Permit by day one of hire.
  • 4 years of journey-level experience in light, medium, or heavy-duty equipment service and repair, with verification.
  • Ability to pass an OSHA Crane Surveyor examination within 36 months of hire.
  • Ability to work in all types of weather extremes and drive safely in all weather and road conditions.
  • Ability to work flexible schedules, including extended hours, nights, weekends, and overtime (scheduled or ad hoc).
  • Ability to wear company-provided Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 75 pounds at least once daily.

Qualifications (Desired)

  • CA CDL Class A license or equivalent.
  • Mobile Crane Operator certification.
  • CalOSHA Crane Surveyor License.
  • Experience with computer-controlled engine systems.
  • Experience with air brakes and hydraulic systems.
  • Experience with heavy equipment.
  • Proficiency with computer equipment (keyboard and mouse).
  • 2 years of crane-related field duties, such as crane inspection.

Pay

$68.56 per hour.
