About the role

The Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court is recruiting for a full-time, permanent position as a Court Probation Officer 2 (#00054698-24400) in the Standard Probation Division in Albuquerque, NM.

Essential Tasks

• Prepare pre-sentencing reports and appear in court to present recommendations on treatment and sentencing.
• Supervise defendants on probation and manage cases.
• Investigate defendants' educational, family, criminal, and social backgrounds.
• Assess and determine the risks and needs of defendants for treatment and acceptance into programs.
• Review police and court reports.
• Analyze, verify, justify, and report treatment and sentencing recommendations to the court.
• Develop, interpret, and implement supervision plans for defendants.
• Monitor defendants' compliance with sentencing and conditions of probation.
• Perform crisis management and conflict resolution with defendants and their families.
• Schedule hearings and notify parties involved.
• Appear in court to elaborate, defend, or respond to information in pre-sentencing reports.
• Inform and subpoena witnesses.
• Confer with state and defense attorneys and provide advice and recommendations.
• Continually report status of defendants to the court.
• Maintain current roster of defendants.
• Secure, manage, update, and govern individual case files.
• Respond to inquiries on defendants.
• Provide information and referrals to former clients.
• Aid other law enforcement agencies or probation officers with investigations and supervision of other defendants.
• Assign and approve work of others, train employees, and provide informal feedback on performance in the absence of the Chief Probation Officer.
• Work under stress and be able to get along with others.

Examples of Job Duties

• Conduct investigations on defendants/offenders and establish needs for treatment support plans.
• Participate in scheduled progress meetings at court-appointed locations.
• Maintain compliance with defendants/offenders through court hearings and community service program requirements.
• Document and report compliance, non-compliance, or program violations to the court.
• Maintain current case files and document interactions with program defendants/offenders and treatment providers.

  • Knowledge of court-ordered rehabilitation or support programs, sentencing guidelines, treatment options, and community services.
  • New Mexico law, civil and criminal procedure.
  • Local court rules, policies, and procedures, operations, and structure.

  • Substance abuse and mental health counseling and treatment.
  • Mediation techniques and conflict resolution.
  • Investigative techniques.

  Work Environment and Physical Demands

  The job is performed in an office or court setting. A valid driver's license and travel may be required. The work schedule may include nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime. The employee must regularly interact positively with co-workers, clients, the public, judges, and justices.

  Qualifications

  • Minimum Qualification: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Criminal Justice, Social Sciences, or a related field.
  • Experience: Three (3) years of experience in criminal justice, social services, or related field.
  • Education Substitution: Four (4) years of directly related or relevant experience may substitute on a year for year basis.
  • Experience Substitution: None.
  • Other: May be required to obtain and maintain National Crime Information Center (NCIC) certification within six (6) months of hire.
