County Patrolman

About the role

This position enforces state and local laws relating to public safety and welfare, exercising independent judgment in dangerous or unusual situations and applying safety practices or procedures.

Responsibilities

• Patrol an assigned district in a patrol car to observe for criminal activity or public safety hazards, investigate complaints, and enforce laws while maintaining high visibility.
• Investigate and report accidents, defective streets, sidewalks, traffic lights, signs, or other hazardous conditions.
• Investigate crimes, interview witnesses, complainants, and victims; gather and preserve physical evidence for court; conduct follow-up investigations as needed.
• Enforce all felony and misdemeanor laws when necessary.
• Serve as a witness in court and provide evidence as required.
• Check county properties for security upon request.
• Assist county departments with safety training and monitor proper safety practices.
• Assist motorists in various situations as needed.
• Contact complainants and/or victims within a reasonable timeframe and keep them informed of investigation progress.

Requirements

• High School Diploma.
• Valid Mississippi Driver’s License.
• Completion of police academy training or equivalent; or a Professional Certificate from the State of Mississippi to meet the minimum Standards Act of 1981 (required if sworn in as a County Patrol Officer).
• On call 24 hours a day for emergencies or call-outs.
