Counselor
About the role
The Counselor performs therapy services for research participants during clinical trials in Psychiatry and Health Behavior.
Responsibilities
- Screen Participants for Eligibility
- Prepare them mentally for the experience
- Sustain them during sessions
- Help integrate the experience afterward
- Ensure safety and compliance with research protocols
Participation Days
- Run pre-session prep visits (60-120 min)
- Facilitate or co-facilitate psychedelic dosing sessions (6-8+ hours)
- Maintain: emotional response and vital signs (with medical team)
- Stay present the entire session
Non-Session (Participant Days)
- Conduct screening interviews
- Do integration therapy sessions
- Enter clinical notes & research data
- Attend supervision meetings, protocol training, and safety reviews
Required Qualifications
- Education: Master's degree from an accredited college or university in mental health counseling, psychology, social work, marital and family therapy, or another similar mental health field. Employee must be license eligible to become fully licensed to provide mental health services and treatment independently in the state of Georgia.
- Experience: Preferred Experience includes PTSD (MDMA-assisted therapy), Depression (psilocybin), Anxiety (especially end-of-life), Substance use disorders (alcohol, nicotine), Treatment-resistant depression, Altered states competency, Crisis-management, Ethical and boundary awareness, Regulatory and legal reality.
Shift/Salary/Benefits
- Shift: Days/M-F (work outside of the normal business hours will likely be required of an employee in an exempt level position)
- Pay Band: 9
- Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position
- Recruitment Period: 5/28/26 - Until Filled

Conditions of Employment
- All selected candidates are required to successfully pass a Background Check review prior to starting with Augusta University.
- If applicable for the specific position based on the duties: the candidate will also need to have a credit check completed for Positions of Trust and or approved departmental Purchase Card usage.
- Motor vehicle reports are required for positions that are required to drive an Augusta University vehicle.
