About the role
The Michigan Department of Corrections is seeking Corrections Officers and Corrections Medical Officers. This is an entry-level position that involves overseeing and participating in the custody, security, and treatment of prisoners in correctional facilities.
Responsibilities
- Oversight and participation in the custody, security, and treatment of prisoners
- Learning and development of interpersonal skills required to perform a range of corrections officer assignments
- Completion of DOC Officer Recruit Training program consisting of 8 weeks of academy training and 2 months of on-the-job training
- Completion of probationary period at an assigned correctional facility (locations throughout the state)
- Annual training and continuing certification as a Corrections Officer
Requirements
- Education: 15 semester (23 term) college credits in any field, or completion of basic training in the uniformed services
- Experience: 8 years as a corrections officer in another local, state, federal, or private correctional institution, or 2 years of full-time corrections officer experience in another local, state, federal or private correctional institution, and currently employed satisfactorily in a corrections officer position
Qualifications
- Age: Must be at least 18 years old at the time of employment
- Medical Exam: Must pass a post-job-offer medical exam
- Drug Screen: Must pass a drug screen
- Physical Fitness Test: Must pass a physical fitness test
- Training: Completion of an approved eight-week corrections officer training program, followed by eight weeks of on-the-job training
