Captains’ Assessment – Supervisor/Peer evaluations will be completed on each candidate.
Rankings will be used to assist the Fire Chief in making a hiring decision.
Candidates must pass the application appraisal and must receive an adjusted score of 70% or higher on each scored exam to be placed on the eligible list for Fire Engineer.
Destruction, keeping or making copies of any material contained in the written test is a violation of copyright law.
Spontaneous reaction is a part of/included in the rest of the testing process.
Arrive at the test site at your scheduled date and time and check in with the proctor.
Any attempts to preview any testing will result in elimination from the testing process.
IDENTIFYING CHARACTERISTICS
The Fire Engineer performs a broad range of tasks relevant to the assumed duties, usually under general supervision.
This position is fully trained in the scope of duties associated with this class and performs the full range of assigned duties with increasing independence.
Examples of Duties
Drives, operates and locates fire apparatus and other fire related equipment at fire scenes;
Sets, controls and directs the flow and pressure of water to fire.
Responds to all fire alarms with designated equipment while on duty.
Responds to emergency medical care incidents, provides basic life support, operates emergency vehicle and assists paramedics, as necessary.
Inspects commercial properties for fire prevention and pre-fire planning as part of engine company inspection program.
Maintains and repairs fire apparatus and equipment in accordance with daily and other periodic maintenance schedules.
Performs public education functions to civic organizations, schools, and other groups.
Performs station and hydrant maintenance.
May be assigned to make repairs to fire pumps, valves, trucks, motors and other emergency apparatus or equipment, as necessary.
May have other assignments, such as CPR, heavy rescue techniques, cause and origin of fires, hazardous materials, etc.
Participates in fire drills and on-going training exercises and classes.
May act as Fire Captain in the absence of the Captain.
Prepares written reports, as required.
Deals politely and effectively with the public.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Typical Qualifications
Knowledge Of Principles, practices and techniques of modern municipal fire suppression and prevention activities.
Principles and practices related to providing emergency medical assistance including equipment, terms, and definitions.
CPR and advanced first aid.
Fire hydraulics and basic math.
South Lake Tahoe street system and location of structures containing hazardous or highly combustible materials.
City water system, fire hydrant locations, fire sprinkler/standpipe systems, siamese connections locations and preventive maintenance of said systems.
Radio procedures.
Computer operations.
Ability To Drive and operate emergency fire apparatus and other emergency and life-saving devices.
To take command of the fire station, fire scene or other emergency situations in the absence of superior officers.
To perform field calculation for hydraulics.
To use a resuscitator and administer first aid and CPR.
To think and act quickly and calmly in emergencies.
To use mechanic hand tools, carpenter’s tools, breathing apparatus, axes, shovels, chain saws and extrication equipment including Jaws of Life.
To demonstrate physical endurance, agility and strength required for the job.
To prepare clear and concise reports.
