About the role

The Corrections Nurse positions are available for both Registered Nurses and Licensed Practical Nurses. These roles are direct employees of the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, not contracted.

Responsibilities

  • Obtains a health history and assesses for illness or injury on each incarcerated inmate.
  • Communicates with Classifications regarding appropriate housing assignment.
  • Implementation of medical protocols when appropriate.
  • Communicates with Medical Provider regarding health issues, medical treatment and/or medications.
  • Administers the correct medication and dosage to the correct inmate.
  • Obtains prior medical records when indicated.
  • Affirms mental health status of all inmates.
  • Implements mental health policy as appropriate.
  • Communicates with mental health personnel when psychiatric intervention is identified.
  • Implements and monitors appropriate withdrawal protocols.
  • Supervises isolation techniques and monitors inmates with communicable diseases.
  • Responds to medical situations within the jail.
  • Aids medical provider during Doctor Rounds.
  • Collaborates on appointments and transfers.
  • Performs all medical treatments as required and obtains laboratory specimens.
  • Documents appropriate information in each health record.
  • Participates in unit staff meetings.
  • Orientation and training of new personnel.

Requirements

  • Must have a current license to practice as a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse in Colorado with experience in medical assessments.
  • Must be able to successfully pass polygraph, drug screen and background investigation.
  • Prior experience with mental health and substance abuse interventions is preferred.

  • Well organized and possesses detailed assessment skills.
  • Able to think and act critically.
  • Interacts well with others.
  • Remains current in correctional health care standards, as well as changes in community nursing care standards.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the security issues surrounding inmate health care in a detention setting.

Skills

  • Ability to work in a high-stress environment.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Knowledge of correctional health care standards.

Pay

Pay Range: $39.21 - $56.44
Specialty Pay: $7/hour extra for all shifts
Pay Range for Registered Nurses: $26.50 - $38.17
Specialty Pay for Licensed Practical Nurses: $5/hour extra for all shifts

Schedule

Hours of work may vary and may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
