About the role

Employees in this classification perform responsible professional nursing care at a unit of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. Reports data; identifies and reports alterations in patient responses to assist in the identification of problems and formulation of goals/outcomes. Assists with or performs exams and procedures and documents intervention in EMR. Prepares and operates necessary equipment and instruments for examinations, treatments, and procedures. Administers or assists with administration or documentation of medications. Assures that physical counts of sharps, instruments, & keys are correct and documented in appropriate logs. Maintains working knowledge of current issues and treatment modalities. Effectively participates in the overall goals of the Managed Care team. Responds to all requests in a timely manner as required. Supports the goal of the unit by attending meetings. Triage sick call requests. Performs nursing rounds as needed in all required areas.

  • Administers or assists with administration or documentation of medications.
  • Ensures that physical counts of sharps, instruments, & keys are correct and documented in appropriate logs.
  • Maintains working knowledge of current issues and treatment modalities.
  • Participates effectively in the overall goals of the Managed Care team.

Requirements

  • Current RN License in the State of Texas, or ability to transfer license to Texas, or scheduled to complete a program of nursing within 120 days of applying for a position.
  • Graduated from an approved accredited nursing program.
  • New graduates must pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) on the first attempt.
  • No experience required.

Qualifications

  • Previous nursing experience in a medical/surgical environment.
  • Experience working in a correctional setting.
  • Current BLS/CPR certification.
  • Previous wound care experience.

Skills

  • Effective communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Knowledge of current issues and treatment modalities.

Pay

Compensation is commensurate upon the qualifications of the individual selected and budgetary guidelines of the hiring department, as well as the institutional pay plan. For additional information, please reference the institutional pay plan website at https://app4.ttuhsc.edu/payplan.
