Correctional Unit Medical Director

Key Responsibilities

  • Provides Clinical Leadership & Medical Oversight
  • Serves as the Unit Health Authority, ensuring the delivery of quality healthcare services and compliance with organizational, regulatory, and accreditation standards.
  • Collaborates with the Regional Medical Director and correctional leadership to address clinical, operational, and patient care needs.
  • Delivers Comprehensive Patient Care
  • Evaluates, diagnoses, and treats acute and chronic medical conditions through patient assessments, examinations, and clinical decision-making.
  • Orders and interprets diagnostic tests, develops treatment plans, and coordinates specialty referrals as needed.
  • Ledrs & Supports Healthcare Providers
  • Supervises physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners, providing clinical oversight and mentorship.
  • Delegates prescriptive authority and promotes a culture of teamwork, accountability, and clinical excellence.
  • Maintains Quality, Compliance & Documentation
  • Maintains accurate medical records and ensures timely, thorough clinical documentation.
  • Maintains compliance with TTUHSC, TDCJ, and applicable healthcare policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Supports Continuity of Care
  • Participates in the provider call rotation to ensure patient access to care after hours, on weekends, and holidays.
  • Responds to urgent clinical needs and supports continuity of healthcare services across the correctional unit.

Required Qualifications

  • Current license to practice medicine by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners.
  • Current Drug Enforcement Agency certificate.

As the Correctional Unit Medical Director, you will oversee the delivery of comprehensive healthcare services within a Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) facility, ensuring timely, high-quality, and accessible care for an underserved patient population. Working with significant autonomy, you will provide medical oversight, exercise independent clinical judgment, and ensure compliance with TTUHSC Correctional Health Services policies, TDCJ regulations, and National Commission on Correctional Health Care standards. In addition to providing patient care, you will lead and mentor a team of physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners, fostering a culture of clinical excellence and collaboration.
