About the role
The Kentucky Department of Corrections seeks a Correctional Sergeant to supervise correctional officers and manage inmate populations.
Responsibilities
- Supervise correctional officers in maintaining custody and control of inmates.
- Conduct periodic inmate counts and searches for contraband.
- Respond appropriately in emergency situations and complete investigations.
- Complete evaluations on employees and ensure reports are completed in a timely manner.
Requirements
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- One year of experience in corrections, law enforcement, criminal justice, social work, or similar field.
- Must be at least 21 years old.
- Must have a valid driver's license.
- For the Department of Juvenile Justice, must successfully complete the Department of Juvenile Justice Training Academy within six months of employment.
Qualifications
- A bachelor's degree in corrections, criminal justice, law enforcement, or a related field can substitute for one year of experience.
- A master's degree can substitute for two years of experience.
- Substitute experience for education as described above.
Skills
The ideal candidate should have strong observation, communication, leadership, and decision-making skills.
