About the role

This is a full-time, hazardous duty position with an excellent pension plan. The schedule is Monday through Friday, first shift from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

Selected candidates will be required to attend a 14-week hazardous duty training at the Maloney Center for Training & Staff Development in Cheshire, CT.

Responsibilities

• Repair and maintain critical systems, including:
  • Drinking (potable) piping distribution/pumping
  • Hot water heating
  • Steam distribution piping
  • Drain (sanitary) piping, macerator (grinding and pumping)
  • Cross connection (backflow prevention)
  • Cell fixtures (toilets, sinks, and showers)
• Supervise assigned inmates at a correctional institution.
• Maintain records of tool and inventory control.
• Protect the health and safety of the public, staff, and inmates.
• Perform snow and ice removal to maintain safe access for police, medical staff, and the public.
• Ensure compliance with Federal and State statutes regarding indigency directives and policies by maintaining humane conditions of confinement through repair and maintenance.
• Plan, lay out, and schedule work.
• Instruct inmates in methods and techniques of measuring, cutting, threading, and installing pipes, valves, gauges, and other fixtures.
• Determine defects and maintain piping systems for steam, gas, water, air, and pressure.
• Train inmates in reading blueprints and schematic drawings.
• Perform preventative maintenance and troubleshoot plumbing and steamfitting systems.
• Repair fire protection systems and perform air quality testing.
• Act as liaison with outside vendors, contractors, and agency staff.
• Work on specialized equipment relating to the trade area, including high-pressure steam equipment.
• Test and monitor pumps, boilers, and heating systems.
• Maintain custody, discipline, and evaluate the performance of each inmate assigned to the work area.
• Perform supplemental duties related to other trade disciplines based on experience, knowledge, skills, and agency needs.
• May purchase equipment and physically restrain inmates or quell disturbances in emergencies.
• May be required to operate a motor vehicle.

Requirements

• Three (3) years of experience as a plumber and/or steamfitter.
• One (1) year of the general experience must have been at a highly skilled level.
• Graduation from a vocational or technical school in the trade may substitute for one (1) year of the general experience.
• Experience performing technical duties within the maintenance trade area on a military base, aircraft carrier, or large compound may substitute for the general and special experience on a year-for-year basis.
• Must have reached the age of 18.
• May be required to successfully complete a formal training course in correctional work.
• May be required to respond to after-hour emergencies.
• May be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's license.
• May be required to travel.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with repair and maintenance of commercial plumbing systems and associated controls.
• Valid P1 (Unlimited Plumbing Contractor) or P2 (Unlimited Journeyperson Plumber) License.

Skills

• Considerable knowledge of materials, methods, tools, and equipment involved in plumbing and steamfitting trades.
• Knowledge of building codes, maintenance, and repair of sprinkler systems, and operation of institutional steam boilers and heating systems.
• Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
• Ability to plan, layout, and schedule maintenance assignments.
• Ability to operate and interpret computerized and automated control systems.
• Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.
• Ability to read blueprints and schematics.
• Ability to work in confined spaces and troubleshoot plumbing and steamfitting issues.
• Ability to instruct inmates or other employees in techniques and skills of plumbing and steamfitting.
• Ability to perform under stress and remain stable in pressure situations.
• Supervisory ability.
