Correctional General Maintenance Officer (40 Hour) #260812-2246CP-002

This position supports the Facilities Management & Engineering Unit in the maintenance and operation of Cybulski Correctional Institution. This posting may be used to fill vacancies across the state.

About the role

As a Correctional General Maintenance Officer, you will:

• Provide maintenance of critical systems such as security fence and motorized gates, cell and facility door locks and hardware, and surveillance cameras and infrastructure;
• Supervise assigned inmates;
• Keep a record of tool inventory and control;
• Perform snow and ice removal to maintain safe access for the police, medical, staff, and public;
• Protect the health and safety of public, staff, and inmates;
• Maintain mandated compliance with Federal & State statute and agency directives and policies by assuring humane conditions of confinement in the facility through repair and maintenance.

Candidates selected for hire are required to attend a fourteen (14) week training at the CTDOC Training Academy.

Responsibilities

• Performs a variety of general building repairs and maintenance such as interior and exterior painting, electrical, plumbing or mechanical maintenance, masonry and carpentry;
• Maintains and repairs doors, gates and locks;
• Paints structures, installs and replaces glass, repairs plaster and completes masonry work to walls, walks and floors;
• Replaces or repairs defective electrical equipment such as switches and lighting fixtures;
• Maintains plumbing and power distribution systems;
• Assists in general maintenance of high-pressure steam and boiler systems;
• Periodically inspects equipment, makes adjustments and repairs, and performs preventive maintenance tasks;
• Assists in detecting plumbing defects; defines repairs needed and works with contractors in making repairs;
• Repairs and maintains machinery such as motors, engines, compressors or other mechanical equipment;
• Trains, supervises and maintains custody and discipline of a group of assigned inmates;
• Applies general safety standards while performing maintenance and repair work;
• Provides staff training and assistance;
• May perform supplemental duties related to other trade disciplines based on experience, knowledge, skills and agency needs;
• May be required to restrain inmates, quell disturbances and otherwise assist security forces in emergencies;
• May use welding equipment;
• May be required to operate a motor vehicle;
• Performs related duties as required.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications - General Experience:

• Three (3) years of experience in the operation, maintenance and repair of large buildings and utility services.

NOTE: Based on an individual’s technical experience, the length of credited service will be determined at the discretion of facility management.

Minimum Qualifications - Substitutions Allowed:

• Experience performing technical duties within the maintenance trade area on a military base, aircraft carrier or large compound may be substituted for the General Experience on a year-for-year basis.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skill and Ability:

• Considerable knowledge of building materials and methods of repair and maintenance;
• Knowledge of basic principles and techniques of plumbing, electrical repair, carpentry, painting, mechanical maintenance, and masonry;
• Interpersonal skills;
• Oral and written communication skills;
• Considerable ability to recognize maintenance problems and determine corrective operations needed;
• Ability to operate and interpret computerized and automated control systems;
• Ability to plan, layout and schedule assignments and estimate cost of jobs;
• Ability to maintain records and prepare reports;
• Ability to read blueprints and diagrams;
• Ability to instruct inmates in techniques and skill of general maintenance activities;
• Ability to perform under stress and remain stable in pressure situations;
• Supervisory ability.

Preferred Qualifications:

• A construction or trade license;
• A welding certification;
• Experience working in a correctional facility.

Special Requirements

• Incumbents in this class must have reached their 18th birthday.
• Incumbents in this class may be required to successfully complete a formal training course in correctional work to develop the knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the class.
• Incumbents in this class may be required to respond to after-hour emergencies as requested by facilities supervisors.
• Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
• Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.

Physical Requirements

• Incumbents in this class must have general good health, be free from any disease or injury which would impair health or usefulness.
• Possess and retain sufficient physical strength, stamina, agility, endurance and visual and auditory acuity required to perform all the duties of the class.
• A comprehensive medical examination, including a controlled substance screening, is required.

Location: Willard Cybulski Correctional Institution in Enfield, CT.

Office/On-site Full-time Monday - Friday 7:00AM - 3:00PM
