About the role

This is a full-time, first-shift position (40 hours per week, Monday–Friday) with excellent benefits including health and dental. Selected candidates must attend a 14-week Training Academy in Cheshire, CT.

As a Correctional Electrician, you will maintain:

• Emergency generators and emergency lighting
• Fence alarm systems
• Perimeter lighting
• Motorized gates
• Fire alarm systems
• Emergency power/UPS equipment
• Cell door control systems
• Surveillance cameras and recording system infrastructure
• High/low voltage distribution system
• Equipment in kitchen and laundry areas
• Facility and cell infrastructure wiring
• Record of tool inventory/control
• Snow and ice removal
• Supervision of assigned inmates

About us

The Connecticut Department of Correction (DOC) is a diverse agency responsible for corrections in Connecticut, operating 13 correctional facilities with headquarters in Wethersfield. The DOC ensures offenders serve sentences in safe, humane facilities with re-entry programming. The Engineering/Facilities Management Services unit provides centralized direction for capital projects, facility maintenance, and repairs, and coordinates a recycling program processing over 1,310 tons of cardboard and large volumes of plastic, glass, and cans annually.

Responsibilities

• Repair, maintain, and install electrical systems and equipment such as motors, transformers, generators, wiring, switches, fixtures, circuit breakers, emergency lighting, and fire alarms.
• Diagnose electrical malfunctions using test instruments (e.g., amp meter, voltmeter, VOM tester) and repair defects by replacing components or rewiring.
• Provide instruction, training, and supervision to inmates assigned electrical maintenance duties, including planning and wiring new installations.
• Maintain records, complete reports, and evaluate inmate performance.
• Enforce discipline and security measures; may perform supplemental trade duties based on agency needs.
• Assist security forces in emergencies, including physically restraining inmates or quelling disturbances.
• Operate a motor vehicle as required.

Requirements

• Three (3) years of experience as an electrician.
• One (1) year of highly skilled electrical experience.
• Graduation from a vocational/technical school in the electrical trade may substitute for one (1) year of general experience.
• Military experience in maintenance trade may substitute on a year-for-year basis.
• Must be at least 18 years old.
• May require completion of a formal training course in correctional work.
• May need to respond to after-hour emergencies.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience maintaining and repairing electrical infrastructure in commercial buildings.
• Installation and repair of control wiring for motors, automation, fire-alarm, security CCTV, and data networks.
• Inspection, testing, and repair of electrical appliances, including kitchen and laundry equipment.
• Experience with standby generators, transfer switches, and UPS systems.
• Knowledge of the National Electrical Code.
• Experience with Building Management Systems and Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Excel).
• Valid E-1 (Unlimited Electrical Contractor) or E-2 (Unlimited Electrical Journeyperson) license.
