About the role

This is a full-time, first-shift position (Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM) responsible for the repair and maintenance of critical systems, including:

• Drinking (potable) piping distribution and pumping
• Hot water heating systems
• Steam distribution piping
• Drain (sanitary) piping, macerator (grinding and pumping)
• Cross-connection (backflow prevention)
• Cell fixtures (toilets, sinks, and showers)
• Supervision of assigned inmates in a correctional institution
• Tool and inventory control record-keeping
• Ensuring the health and safety of the public, staff, and inmates
• Snow and ice removal to maintain safe access
• Maintaining compliance with Federal and State statutes regarding humane conditions of confinement

Responsibilities

• Plan, lay out, and schedule plumbing, heating, and steamfitting work
• Instruct inmates in measuring, cutting, threading, and installing pipes, valves, gauges, and fixtures
• Determine defects and maintain piping systems for steam, gas, water, air, and pressure
• Train inmates in reading blueprints and schematic drawings
• Perform preventative maintenance and troubleshoot plumbing and steamfitting systems
• Repair fire protection systems and perform air quality testing
• Act as liaison with outside vendors, contractors, and agency staff
• Work on specialized equipment, including high-pressure steam systems
• Test and monitor pumps, boilers, and heating systems
• Maintain records and prepare reports
• Maintain custody, discipline, and evaluate inmate performance in the work area
• Perform supplemental duties related to other trade disciplines as needed
• Physically restrain inmates and assist security forces in emergencies
• Operate a motor vehicle as required

Requirements

• Three (3) years of experience as a plumber and/or steamfitter (licensure not required)
• One (1) year of highly skilled experience in plumbing and/or steamfitting
• Graduation from a vocational or technical school in the trade may substitute for one (1) year of general experience
• Military experience in technical maintenance may substitute for general and special experience on a year-for-year basis
• Must be at least 18 years of age
• May be required to complete a formal training course in correctional work
• May be required to respond to after-hour emergencies
• May be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license
• May be required to travel
• Must pass a thorough background investigation and medical examination

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with repair and maintenance of commercial plumbing systems and associated controls
• Valid P1 (Unlimited Plumbing Contractor) or P2 (Unlimited Journeyperson Plumber) License

Skills

• Considerable knowledge of plumbing and steamfitting materials, methods, tools, and equipment
• Knowledge of building codes, sprinkler systems, and institutional steam boilers
• Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
• Ability to plan, layout, and schedule maintenance assignments
• Proficiency in operating and interpreting computerized and automated control systems
• Ability to read blueprints and schematics
• Experience working in confined spaces
• Troubleshooting skills for plumbing and steamfitting issues
• Ability to instruct inmates or employees in plumbing and steamfitting techniques
• Ability to perform under stress and remain stable in high-pressure situations
• Supervisory ability

Training

Selected candidates will be required to attend a 14-week hazardous duty training at the Maloney Center for Training & Staff Development in Cheshire, CT.
