CORRECTIONAL COUNSELOR II (SUPERVISOR)

About the role

The Correctional Counselor II (Supervisor) manages incarcerated person cases, including establishing and monitoring programming needs for incarcerated persons via Institutional Classification Committee (ICC) recommendations and decisions. They interview incarcerated persons, counsel on personal, institutional, and family concerns, collect and record relevant documentation, and schedule cases for ICC review.

Responsibilities

  • Interviews incarcerated persons and evaluates casework needs
  • Counsels incarcerated persons on personal, institutional, and family concerns
  • Collects, evaluates, and records documentation relevant to incarcerated persons' placement
  • Records ICC actions and behavioral data on incarcerated persons
  • Makes recommendations pertinent to classification
  • Schedules cases for ICC review for various reasons
  • Supervises Correctional Counselor I's and reviews their work performance

Requirements

Minimum qualifications include possession of a valid California Driver’s License, completion of a Bachelor’s degree in a related field, and a minimum of two years of experience in a correctional setting. Additional requirements may include a background check, fingerprinting, and tuberculosis testing.

Ability to plan, organize, and direct the work of others; apply the principles and practices of counseling and guidance; interpret test results; evaluate sociological, psychological, psychiatric, and vocational findings and make recommendations; coordinate the work of professional and technical employees in inmate guidance and classification work; secure accurate social data and record such data systematically; speak and write effectively; command the respect and trust of inmates and staff; organize and prioritize work; meet deadlines; deal tactfully/diplomatically with sensitive issues; evaluate situations accurately and take effective action; deal effectively with a high volume of work; work under pressure; respond effectively to emergency situations; work independently; control an interview with an inmate; interpret institutional/departmental policies, rules and regulations; adjust to changes in assignments; work with a team of people from a variety of occupations and professional disciplines; motivate an inmate toward specific goals; recognize and handle dangerous situations for inmates and staff; and effectively contribute to the Department's affirmative action objectives.
