CORRECTIONAL CASE WORKER SPECIALIST TRAINEE

This position will provide services to Three Lakes Valley Conservation Camp (TLVCC), located in Indian Springs. Under direct supervision, incumbents receive training in performing duties related to the evaluation and classification of individual offenders incarcerated within State correctional facilities.

About the Role

This is the entry level for the Correctional Casework Specialist series and provides for progression to the Correctional Casework Specialist 1 upon satisfactory completion of the probationary period, meeting the minimum requirements, and with the recommendation of the hiring authority.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine casework assignments to determine the need for reclassification of individual inmates, analyzing factors such as changes in legal status, progress in service of sentence, parole authority decisions, achievements, and infractions.
  • Serve as a member of the facility’s Disciplinary Committee, hearing cases regarding inmate violations of institutional and work release rules, reviewing case files, investigative reports, witness statements, and evidence to determine guilt and severity of violations.
  • Serve as a member of the Institutions/Facilities Classification Committee, presenting and explaining data regarding inmates on assigned caseload and participating in the classification process.
  • Prepare parole progress reports, including inmate history, criminal background, legal status, institutional adjustment, and program achievements; interview inmates and notify them of hearing dates.
  • Represent the department at Parole Board hearings to provide information and take file notes.
  • Assist inmates in obtaining work assignments by assessing their abilities based on medical records, file history, and personal interviews; make job assignment recommendations to the Classification Committee.
  • Respond to inquiries concerning sentence structure and sentence credits of inmates, reviewing work history, institutional files, and applicable laws.
  • Monitor the status of assigned inmates’ custody level daily, reviewing movement sheets, incident reports, and documenting findings in inmate files.
  • Provide guidance to inmates regarding institutional rules, behavior, program opportunities, personal or family problems, and emergency situations; document interactions and actions taken.
  • Respond to legal matters involving inmates, including inquiries from the Attorney General’s Office and other agencies, conducting research and drafting written responses.
  • Conduct research and draft correspondence for Prison Administrators related to inmate concerns about staff, programs, or institutional policies.
  • Prepare special reports for the Warden or Director regarding statutory good time credits, disciplinary infractions, and inmate transfers under the Interstate Compact Agreement.
  • Process, review, and maintain log books for inmate grievances, assigning case numbers and preparing written responses to resolve issues.
  • Coordinate the movement of inmates involving release, transfer, and housing assignments, ensuring proper documentation and tracking of inmate records and property.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school and three years of experience in a correctional, parole and probation, or comparable setting conducting casework services and investigations, preparing detailed reports for rehabilitation, program development, or institutional classification.
  • OR a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • OR four years of journey-level Correctional Officer experience in Nevada State service performing post assignments requiring substantial interaction with inmates (e.g., disciplinary committees, lockdown units, general population units).
  • OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Ability to communicate effectively on a one-to-one basis to obtain information and explain policies.
  • Ability to obtain and record information quickly and accurately.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and convey accurate data within established time frames.
  • Ability to interpret laws, rules, regulations, and procedures for compliance.
  • Ability to deal effectively with inmates of diverse social, cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds.
