Corporate Tax Counsel (RELOCATION AVAILABLE)

About the role

State Farm is opening a satellite office in Chicago and seeks subject-matter expertise to support its Bloomington, IL-based Corporate Law team. The role is based in the Tax, Reinsurance and Financial Counseling unit of the Corporate Law Department, located in Chicago’s West Loop. The position advises on insurance-related tax and general corporate tax issues, ERISA and tax issues for State Farm benefit programs and financial services products, international tax matters, acquisitions, reinsurance, and financial matters supporting advanced planning.

Responsibilities

• Provide legal advice related to federal and state audits and other controversy work.
• Advise on tax compliance.
• Provide legal advice on issues involving various company transactions including mergers and acquisitions, reinsurance and federal and state tax credits.
• Provide legal advice to appropriate representatives of State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company and its affiliates.
• Provide legal services on behalf of State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company and its affiliates.
• Analyze legal problems and interpret laws and regulations.
• Approach legal matters and/or litigation resolution in creative ways.
• Serve as a resource for the organization on complex issues.

Qualifications

• 7 or more years of federal and state corporate income tax experience, preferably at a medium to large-size law firm, national office of a prominent accounting firm, or in-house corporate legal department.
• Understanding of insurance company taxation is helpful.
• Experience with various company transactions including mergers and acquisitions, reinsurance and tax credits is helpful.
• JD from an ABA-accredited law school and excellent academic credentials.
• Active license to practice law in at least one state and in good standing with the bar.
• If not already licensed in Illinois, obtain at least an in-house limited license within 90 days of start, actively pursue full licensure, and keep supervisor informed.
• Commitment to providing quality legal advice, learning agility, and a history of enthusiastic team participation.

Schedule

Hybrid work arrangement in State Farm’s Chicago Corporate Law Department Satellite Office; work location and remote balance may change based on business need.
