About the Role

We're looking for a sharp, business-minded lawyer to join our scrappy, ambitious team. You'll work on meaningful deals that shape how people watch TV, sitting at the intersection of law and deal-making to help Philo deliver a live TV streaming experience that's smarter, simpler, and more delightful.

Philo's vMVPD service includes 70+ channels (e.g., Paramount Network, AMC, Lifetime, Comedy Central, Discovery, Nickelodeon, MTV), unlimited DVR, and premium add-ons like HBO, AMC+, discovery+, STARZ, and MGM+. We also offer a free ad-supported streaming (FAST) service with over 150 channels. Backed by NEA, Mark Cuban Companies, and industry heavyweights like Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount, we have offices in Brooklyn, NY, San Francisco, CA, and Cambridge, MA.

Responsibilities

  • Negotiate and draft content license agreements, platform deals, production agreements, vendor MSAs, SOWs, and IOs—driving deals to close rather than just reviewing or supervising.
  • Work directly with content acquisition and business development teams to define what content Philo offers and how we grow.
  • Handle a wide range of legal needs, including releases, clearances, IP questions, takedowns, technology/SAAS agreements, and unexpected challenges.
  • Develop legal playbooks, templates, and best practices to improve team efficiency and scalability.
  • Provide practical, business-savvy legal advice that goes beyond correctness to deliver actionable solutions.

Requirements

  • 5–10 years of legal experience, including hands-on television licensing (e.g., network affiliation, FAST).
  • Experience with platform deals is a plus.
  • J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school and active New York Bar membership.
  • Instincts for practical, business-focused legal advice—balancing risk and opportunity.
  • Low ego, high output: prioritizes problem-solving over turf protection.
  • Genuine enthusiasm for media and entertainment—cares about the product and industry, not just the deals.

About the Team

The Legal Team operates as a true business partner, delivering creative, practical solutions to help Philo move fast and win. We're a small but high-impact group—a Chief Legal Officer, a tight in-house team, and relationships with top outside firms. You'll work out of our Brooklyn, NY office alongside two senior lawyers, our CEO, CFO, and other high-level executives.
