Corporate Controller

Grown Rogue is a craft cannabis company that has grown rapidly since 2016, filing in accordance with U.S. GAAP financial statements with the SEC as a domestic filer (Forms 10-K and 10-Q), while maintaining reporting obligations in Canada. The Corporate Controller leads the Company’s accounting function and owns the integrity of its financial reporting.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Directs period-end close, improving month-end close processes and overseeing the work of the Staff Accountant and Senior Accountant.

  • Prepares and reviews month-end inventory and cost of goods sold accounting.

  • Prepares and reviews new and recurring technical areas such as operating and financing leases, debt and equity, share-based compensation, and derivatives.

  • Reviews and approves supporting schedules for all balance sheet GL accounts at month-end.

  • Establishes and enforces a rigorous close calendar and schedule, aiming to close the books on the 5th working day of each month and quarter.

  • With assistance from a third-party advisory group, prepares portions of U.S. GAAP quarterly and annual financial statements and forms 10Q and 10K.

  • Prepares workpapers and memos for complex, non-routine, or unusual transactions in accordance with U.S. GAAP.

  • Enforces coding of expenses in accordance with internal policies for expense codes and cost centers.

  • Audits and takes primary responsibility to respond to or delegate audit requests on a timely basis, serving as a primary internal audit management resource.

  • Documents accounting treatment of transactions and agreements in accordance with U.S. GAAP.

  • Documents and improves internal controls, preparing for SOX compliance in the future.

  • Assists CFO with data requests to facilitate the preparation of state, federal, and Canadian tax returns prepared by third-party firms.

  • Leverages and develops the skills of accounting team members, collaborating with the CFO, Director of FP&A, and Assistant Controller to manage and expand headcount.

  • Assists in the review of agreements both before and after to support technical accounting and risk management.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting; CPA required.

  • 7+ years of accounting experience, with a strong preference for public company audit experience.

  • 3+ years of Controller or financial leadership experience, including supervision of accounting staff.

  • Strong, detailed knowledge of U.S. GAAP.

  • Experience with multi-entity, multi-state consolidations and public-company (SEC) reporting.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel.

  • Proficiency in Power BI and Power Query desired.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Cannabis industry accounting experience (desired, not required).

  • Comfortable utilizing advanced technology like Artificial Intelligence to improve processes and recommended accounting strategies.

Physical Demand and Work Environment

  • This job is conducted in an office work environment, sitting most of the time.

  • Approximately 90% of this position’s duties require use of a computer.

  • Must be able to exert up to 20 lbs. of force occasionally.
