Corporate Accounting Staff Accountant
This position is an integral part of a team of accountants who perform financial accounting for entities outside of the utility and gas marketer businesses of Southern Company Gas, a United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) registrant. It is an in-office role (four days per week, subject to change) within the Southern Company Gas Comptroller’s organization, located in Atlanta, Georgia.
About the role
This position will perform various income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow accounting tasks while ensuring compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) regulations, and Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) requirements. It will also support Southern Company Gas reporting requirements and participate in special projects as needed.
Responsibilities
- Complete monthly journal entries, analysis of financial transactions and results, account reconciliations, and other accounting duties as required.
- Ensure all internal controls surrounding responsibilities are functioning as designed and well supported by appropriate evidence.
- Prepare accounting information that supports or may be included in monthly management reporting.
- Prepare accounting information that supports or may be included in the Southern Company Gas Quarterly Report (Form 10-Q) filed with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission.
- Prepare accounting information that supports or may satisfy other Southern Company Gas reporting requirements, such as stand-alone financial statements.
- Assist with financial audits of Southern Company Gas and its subsidiaries.
- Promote innovation and create workflow efficiencies in a dynamic environment.
- Focus on people development by providing motivation, continuous training, coaching, and performance management for direct reports.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting (or related field) is required.
- Advanced degree is a plus.
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license (or equivalent) is a plus.
- Four or more years of experience in accounting or related fields is required.
- Proficiency in applying Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) is required.
- Experience with month-end close, journal entries, and account reconciliations is required.
Skills
- Understanding of allocations, consolidation, analysis of financial transactions, cash flow, and internal controls is preferred.
- Experience with Oracle Cloud is preferred.
- Working knowledge of the natural gas or electric utility industry and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) Chart of Accounts is a plus.

- Strong interpersonal skills in dealing with people at various levels, including executive management.
