Coordinator of Music (Music Leader)
About the Role
Providence Baptist Church seeks a Coordinator of Music who loves leading the church in congregational singing, enjoys theologically rich music, and wants to see church members use their musical gifts. The ideal candidate values traditional hymns along with modern hymns by Sovereign Grace, City Alight, Indelible Grace, and the Gettys, as well as worship music by Maranatha Music, Vineyard Music, Passion, Matt Redman, and others.
Responsibilities
- Coordinates, directs, and leads congregational and doctrinally rich singing in a manner consistent with the Church’s mission, values, statement of faith, and theology.
- Collaborates with the pastor in selecting songs for congregational singing during the worship service.
- Meets weekly with the senior pastor to review songs and the order of service for the upcoming Sunday.
- Leads musicians and singers in preparing music for congregational singing on the Lord’s Day.
- Functions as the primary music leader of the Music Team during worship services.
- Schedules singers and musicians for leading congregational singing on the Lord’s Day.
- Develops a process for identifying and recruiting church members to sing and play instruments on the Music Team, working under the senior pastor.
- Determines appropriate musical ranges for singers and the congregation.
- Develops weekly lead sheets and chord charts for appropriate parties.
- Suggests and promotes theologically compliant songs to the pastor and congregation, avoiding music produced by Bethel, Elevation Worship, Hillsong, and similar groups.
- Transposes or creates chord charts or number charts.
- Oversees maintenance of all musical instruments owned by the Church.
- Assists in maintaining and repairing the soundboard and sound system, procuring bids for work outside personal expertise.
- Coordinates musical selections for church bulletins, electronic screens, and other formats.
- Collaborates with the Soundboard team to project song lyrics on screens for Sunday services.
- Creates the weekly Proclaim file and inputs lyrics into Proclaim or other software.
- Learns and plays at least one new song per month from the Church’s song list.
- Develops musical skills that promote congregational singing.
- Maintains inventory of music supplies and instruments.
- Reports to the senior pastor.
Requirements
- Willingness to become an active member of the Church upon employment.
- Proficiency in singing and simultaneously playing guitar or piano.
- Knowledge of traditional hymns and contemporary hymns/songs by Sovereign Grace Music, CityAlight Music, Indelible Grace Music, Getty Music, and other doctrinally rich, congregational music.
- Ability to learn, play, and lead the congregation in new songs.
- Proficiency in reading music.
- Experience working collaboratively with a church music ministry or other musical group.
- Belief that music in the church is a teaching ministry designed to put theology in tune (Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16).
- A lifestyle congruent with the biblical requirements for Christian deacons (1 Timothy 3:8-13).
Schedule
This is a part-time, non-exempt support staff position with flexibility to work another full-time job. Responsibilities typically include one rehearsal per week (currently prior to Sunday morning service), leading the Sunday worship service, seasonal planning meetings, and special events. Hours can be as low as 10 hours per week. The role may become full-time if the applicant is gifted in evangelism and outreach.
