Takes the lead in the pre-claim investigations

  • Locating and interviewing witnesses
  • Taking witness statements
  • Gathering documents and evidence
  • Creating case investigation notebooks
  • Organizing documents
  • Creating a chronology of facts
  • Performing initial case assessments
  • Notifying identified schools/departments
  • Advising them of mandated time constraints
  • Monitoring the progress of submitted responsive documents

Document Preparation and Analysis

  • Compiling, analyzing, and preparing documents received from schools/departments for responsiveness, completeness, and confidentiality
  • Notifying assigned attorneys regarding potential confidentiality issues
  • Drafting legal documents
  • Gathering information, materials, documents, reports, and evidence necessary to respond to complaints and/or litigation matters
  • Maintaining pleadings indexes and filing pleadings with the court

Liaison and Reporting

  • Serving as a liaison between members of the legal team and third parties
  • Drafting and preparing reports, correspondence, legal memoranda, responses to formal and informal complaints, and other documents necessary for the delivery of legal services
  • Maintaining legal services database in Legal Files software
  • Generating reports and analyzing results of legal service efforts

Case Management and Settlement

  • Developing and maintaining legal services database in Legal Files software
  • Evaluating, monitoring, and improving legal processes for effectiveness
  • Responding to citizen, staff, and possibly parent inquiries and/or complaints
  • Notarizing affidavits and other documents, as necessary

Legal Compliance and Research

  • Keeping abreast of changes to federal law, state law, and local policy that impact legal services
  • Ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations

Professionalism and Communication

  • Exhibiting high professionalism, standards of conduct, and work ethic
  • Communicating and acting as a team player
  • Promoting teamwork
  • Responding and acting appropriately in confrontational situations
  • Building rapport/relationships within the organization and outside of the organization

Other Duties

  • Performing all other tasks and duties as assigned

Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university preferred with major coursework in a related field. Two years of experience in a legal office and/or law firm preferred. Must be self-motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision. Ability to collaborate with other functional areas. Strong drafting, research, and assessment skills. Demonstrated attention to detail, accuracy, and organization. Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to analyze federal, state and local compliance requirements for school districts. Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed. Ability to organize and coordinate work and cross train in other areas of need in the legal office. Ability to communicate effectively, both oral and written forms. Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted. Forward difficult and non-routine inquiries or requests to appropriate level for resolution. Ability to give and receive information such as options, technical direction, instructions, and reporting results. Demonstrated ability to establish priorities and work on concurrent projects.
