About the Role
The Coordinator of Campus Recreation for Fitness and Wellness oversees and manages all aspects of the Fitness and Wellness Program at Campbell University. This includes decision-making for group exercise classes, personal training, small group training, and other fitness and wellness programming needs. The coordinator manages special events, administrative tasks, and facilitates student participation in fitness conferences and events both on and off campus.
Responsibilities
- Oversee and ensure the safety of students participating in group exercise classes, personal training, and other fitness events, including proactive and reactive risk management.
- Create and enforce policies to mitigate risks and respond to emergencies, including training staff on proper procedures and documentation.
- Determine group exercise class offerings, including scheduling over 600+ classes per year for 3000+ participants.
- Manage all aspects of personal training, including hiring staff, pairing clients with trainers, and securing client information.
- Ensure all liability waivers are completed via IMLeagues before student participation in Intramural programs.
- Be on-call for student employees during evening and early morning program hours.
- Hire, train, mentor, and terminate fitness employees, including group exercise instructors and personal trainers (approximately 30 staff per year).
- Implement assessment methods for the fitness program and its personnel.
- Provide leadership to a graduate assistant, group exercise instructors, personal trainers, and other student employees.
- Stay current with fitness staff certifications, including CPR, First Aid, and group exercise instructor certifications.
- Develop, recruit, and teach group exercise and personal training instructor courses to interested students.
- Market current Fitness and Wellness programs.
- Participate in long-range planning and program implementation as directed by the Director of Campus Recreation.
- Oversee the planning and implementation of Fitness and Wellness program budgets, including equipment and supply needs.
- Lead and/or assist with special events hosted by Campus Recreation and act as a liaison between the department and the university community.
- Manage equipment and supply purchases, maintain inventory, and assist with fitness equipment maintenance.
- Develop the annual budget for fitness equipment, supplies, and projected staffing needs.
- Assist in policy and procedure development, budget preparation, risk management, safety regulations, and emergency procedures.
- Perform regular evaluations of fitness programming and report results to the Director.
- Ensure all HR paperwork is completed, maintain accurate records, and approve payroll for student employees.
- Teach at least two group exercise classes per week and substitute as needed.
- Actively participate in NIRSA, including attending and presenting at state, regional, and national conferences.
- Recruit, evaluate, and select dance team members each season, including managing scholarships, training sessions, and community service outings.
- Maintain regular office hours and report to the Director of Campus Recreation on relevant topics.
- Uphold Campbell University policies and procedures, including Title IX, FERPA, and other state and federal mandates.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred in recreation, physical education, exercise science/physiology, public health, or related field.
- Current certification from AFAA, ACE, or ACSM.
- 1-3 years’ experience in Campus Recreation (2 years as a graduate assistant counts as 1 year of full-time experience).
- Preferred experience in implementing group fitness and personal training programs.
- Experience in higher education or non-profit sector desired.
