About the role

Under the direction of the Practice Manager, this role is responsible for patient scheduling, pre–registration, insurance authorization and precertification for scheduled services.

Responsibilities

  • Patient Scheduling:
    • Book appointments for services at South Shore Hospital (SSH) via telephone or fax with patients, physicians, or physician staff.
    • Re-schedule or cancel patients in the computer as required.
    • Ensure patients understand required tests and any necessary preparations.
    • Use PICIS OR Manager efficiently.
    • Schedule for most hospital departments according to hospital standards.
    • Schedule off-site appointments for wound clinic, Stetson, and 780 Main treatment rooms.
    • Pre-register all patients for scheduled appointments.
    • Run and work from applicable reports.
    • Provide quality customer service to internal and external customers.
  • Insurance Authorization and Benefits Verification:
    • Process all pre-certification, eligibility, and benefit verification for all accounts.
    • Maintain fewer than 5 denials per year.
    • Follow downtime processes effectively.
    • Retrieve authorizations as necessary.
    • Interact with provider offices and insurance companies for authorization processes.
    • Verify all insurance eligibility according to hospital standards.
  • Patient Registration:
    • Register patients with a 98% accuracy rate.
    • Verify demographic information on all patients.
    • Pre-register all patients who call for scheduled appointments.
    • Ensure all necessary patient information is obtained.
  • Technology:
    • Embrace technological solutions to improve work processes and practices.
    • Use department computer programs effectively.
    • Understand and follow computer downtime processes.
    • Review and analyze NEHEN and Passport programs.
    • Manage own API system.
    • Utilize the phone system, including the VERA system.
  • Safety Awareness:
    • Foster a “Culture of Safety” through personal ownership and commitment.
    • Adhere to patient identification policies and procedures.
    • Follow universal precautions and respiratory etiquette guidelines.
    • Understand individual roles and responsibilities during hospital codes (e.g., Code Disaster, Code Red).

Requirements

  • Education: Preferred Associates degree; life experiences considered.
  • Work Experience: 2–5 years in Patient Registration, Billing, Scheduling, or MD offices.
  • Knowledge and Abilities:
    • Knowledge of medical terminology.
    • Telephone experience required.
    • Strong computer skills.
    • Customer service experience required.
    • Understanding of insurance third-party requirements.
    • Ability to work under pressure.
    • Works independently and makes decisions.
    • Functions as part of a team.
