About the role
The Direct Support Professional (DSP) serves as a key member of the team, providing support and guidance to individuals with developmental disabilities. The role involves creating a safe and nurturing environment, promoting personal growth, and assisting with daily living skills.
Responsibilities
- Support the individual by maintaining a safe and clean environment.
- Create a positive environment that encourages individual growth through verbal and physical means.
- Participate in life planning activities and assist in implementing them.
- Aid in the development of social skills to facilitate integration into the community.
- Monitor and protect individuals during community activities.
- Assess and assist with personal health needs, especially during high activity periods.
- Teach and practice home living skills such as cooking, cleaning, and managing personal hygiene.
- Encourage individuals to become self-advocates and demonstrate respect for their rights.
- Document all essential functions and services provided.
- Maintain compliance with mandated reporting and ethical standards.
- Adapt to new knowledge and skills to enhance job performance.
- Participate actively in organizational initiatives and contribute to problem-solving.
- Respect the safety and dignity of all individuals.
Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED.
- Minimum 1-year experience working with developmentally disabled individuals, preferably in a residential or health-related setting.
- Specialized training in direct care provision is preferred.
- Must complete and obtain certification in OPWDD Approved Medication Administration Course (AMAP) during the probationary period and maintain certification.
- Valid NYS Driver’s License required.
- Ability and willingness to obtain First Aid and CPR certification.
- Ability and willingness to obtain SCIPR certification.
Skills

- Ability to adapt to individual needs and preferences.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.

Pay
Salary range: $X-$Y per hour, depending on experience and qualifications.
Schedule
Hours vary based on the needs of the residents, typically ranging from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday.
