About the role

The Direct Support Professional (DSP) serves as a key member of the team, providing support and guidance to individuals with developmental disabilities. The role involves creating a safe and nurturing environment, promoting personal growth, and assisting with daily living skills.

Responsibilities

  • Support the individual by maintaining a safe and clean environment.
  • Create a positive environment that encourages individual growth through verbal and physical means.
  • Participate in life planning activities and assist in implementing them.
  • Aid in the development of social skills to facilitate integration into the community.
  • Monitor and protect individuals during community activities.
  • Assess and assist with personal health needs, especially during high activity periods.
  • Teach and practice home living skills such as cooking, cleaning, and managing personal hygiene.
  • Encourage individuals to become self-advocates and demonstrate respect for their rights.
  • Document all essential functions and services provided.
  • Maintain compliance with mandated reporting and ethical standards.
  • Adapt to new knowledge and skills to enhance job performance.
  • Participate actively in organizational initiatives and contribute to problem-solving.
  • Respect the safety and dignity of all individuals.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Minimum 1-year experience working with developmentally disabled individuals, preferably in a residential or health-related setting.
  • Specialized training in direct care provision is preferred.
  • Must complete and obtain certification in OPWDD Approved Medication Administration Course (AMAP) during the probationary period and maintain certification.
  • Valid NYS Driver’s License required.
  • Ability and willingness to obtain First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Ability and willingness to obtain SCIPR certification.

Skills

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of developmental disabilities and best practices in care delivery.
  • Ability to adapt to individual needs and preferences.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.

Pay

Salary range: $X-$Y per hour, depending on experience and qualifications.

Schedule

Hours vary based on the needs of the residents, typically ranging from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday.
