About the Role
Empowered Staffing is partnered with a well-established and growing General Contractor with a diverse range of projects across healthcare, contract, and residential sectors. The Controller will lead the company's accounting function, oversee construction accounting and job costing, manage WIP reporting and cash flow, and partner closely with leadership and project teams to support financial performance and profitable growth.
Responsibilities
- Lead all accounting functions, including general ledger, AP, AR, payroll oversight, fixed assets, and financial reporting.
- Manage the month-end and year-end close and ensure accurate financial statements and reporting.
- Oversee budgets, forecasts, operating results, margins, backlog, and financial trends.
- Partner with the company's outside CPA firm on tax preparation, planning, and financial reporting.
- Oversee construction job costing, project budgets, cost codes, contracts, purchase orders, change orders, and cost allocations.
- Prepare and review WIP schedules, cost-to-complete forecasts, earned revenue, over/under billings, and gross margin projections.
- Partner with project managers to review job costs, labor and equipment costs, change orders, and projected final costs.
- Coordinate audits, tax filings, and reporting for CPAs, lenders, sureties, insurers, and other agencies.
- Partner with project management and operations to support decisions around bids, contracts, staffing, procurement, and project execution.
- Improve accounting systems, workflows, reporting, dashboards, and overall financial processes.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- 8+ years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 5 years in construction or commercial general contracting.
- Experience with construction accounting, job costing, WIP reporting, cost-to-complete forecasting, and revenue recognition.
- Strong understanding of U.S. GAAP and financial statement preparation.
- Experience with budgeting, forecasting, cash management, internal controls, audits, and full-cycle accounting.
Skills
- Experience with construction accounting software; Premier is preferred, with Sage 300 CRE, Sage Intacct, Vista, Spectrum, CMiC, Foundation, Procore, or comparable systems also relevant.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
- CPA or CMA designation and/or an MBA is a plus.
