Controller
About the role
Calyx Containers is a 10-year-old packaging innovation company primarily serving the cannabis industry from Salt Lake City. We design, manufacture, and source compliant packaging - rigid containers, flexible packaging, and labels - through a hybrid model that combines our own domestic digital manufacturing facility with an international partnership network. This year we are launching Calyx Command, our new digital quoting and ordering platform, which is transforming how customers get from artwork to delivered product and helping us expand quickly into other industries.
Responsibilities
Own the entire accounting and financial operations of the company, end to end. This is a hands-on, in-the-numbers controllership at a business with real complexity: physical inventory and WIP on a production floor, standard costs, multi-state sales tax, international supplier payments, and a growing software layer on top.
Run a tight monthly close, keep cash visibility sharp, and build the internal controls of a company preparing for its next stage of growth.
Partner directly with the President who retains strategic finance and runs it on a modern, automation-heavy toolset. That split is deliberate. You will not be building alone. You inherit a rockstar senior staff accountant who knows our systems, our customers and our close.
Own the following areas:
Monthly close and financial package: A disciplined 5-7 business day close with a complete reporting package: P&L, balance sheet, cash flow, and departmental detail, delivered to leadership on a fixed calendar, every month, no exceptions.
Weekly cash forecast: A rolling 13-week cash forecast maintained and reviewed weekly, tied to AR, AP, and production commitments.
Accounts receivable: Invoicing accuracy, collections cadence, and DSO management across a customer base that includes large multi-state operators.
Accounts payable: Vendor payments across domestic suppliers, international sourcing partners, and freight, with clean approval workflows.
Credit and risk: Customer credit limits, terms decisions, and exposure management.
Inventory and cost accounting: Standard costing, WIP, variance analysis, and cycle count discipline for our manufacturing operation, plus landed cost on sourced product.
Fixed assets: Capitalization policy, depreciation schedules, and asset tracking for a capital-equipment-heavy production floor.
Internal controls: Segregation of duties, approval matrices, reconciliation discipline, and documentation that would stand up to outside scrutiny.
Sales tax: Multi-state nexus tracking, registration, filing, and exemption certificate management.
Payroll administration: Accurate, on-time payroll and benefits deductions executed through Gusto, supported by our staff accountant.
