About the role

We're hiring a Senior Software Engineer for Newsela. This role leverages AI tools to accelerate velocity while maintaining high standards of quality. The ideal candidate will own feature delivery from conception to deployment, collaborating closely with Engineering, Product Management, and Product Design teams.

Responsibilities

• Deliver high-quality work on time, utilizing AI tools to enhance development efficiency.
• Own feature delivery end-to-end, including scoping, design input, implementation, and release.
• Craft well-tested software that meets a high bar for quality, employing AI-assisted development practices judiciously.
• Partner closely with Engineering, Product Management, and Product Design to refine ambiguous work into clearly defined, valuable deliverables.
• Maintain reliable systems by applying best practices for observability, quality, and incident response, and using AI tooling to detect, diagnose, and resolve issues faster.
• Support production releases, ensuring your team's systems are deployment-ready and stable post-release.

Requirements

• 5+ years building production web applications, demonstrating a strong full-stack range (modern React/TypeScript frontends and a typed or Pythonic backend).
• A track record of owning ambiguous problems end-to-end and shipping with measurable impact.
• Substantive code review history, showcasing examples of catching architectural issues.
• Active daily use of AI coding agents (Claude Code or similar), with a clear perspective on where they help, where they hurt, and how to keep their output reviewable.
• Comfort with production debugging across the stack: traces, logs, profiling, and the unglamorous parts.
• Strong async written communication: clear PR descriptions, Slack comms, and specifications.

Qualifications

• Experience with modern JavaScript frameworks and libraries.
• Knowledge of cloud platforms and services (AWS, GCP, Azure).
• Understanding of DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines.
• Experience with database management and optimization.
• Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently and collaboratively.

Skills

• Proficiency in TypeScript, Python, or other relevant languages.
• Experience with AI and machine learning technologies.
• Good understanding of security best practices.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills.

Pay

The base salary range for this role is $100,000 - $200,000 annually. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.

This role is remote and can be performed anywhere in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, or Costa Rica.
