About the role

Responsible for performing administrative and underwriting duties to support the consumer lending function; achieving goals as established in the bank’s business objectives; coordinating work within the department, as well as with other departments; complying with operating policies and procedures established for the consumer loan function; communicating with appropriate personnel; maintaining appropriate records and providing assigned reports.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluates consumer loan requests Auto Loans, Credit Cards, Home Equity, Personal Loans, and Recreational Vehicles
  • Checks for completeness and accuracy
  • Verifies personal, employment, and financial information with confirmation through use of pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements and compares income against loan requirements and internal guidelines
  • Completes credit risk assessment
  • Evaluates credit reports and identifies any risk indicators
  • Affirms debt-to-income (DTI) ratios and repayment capacity
  • Reviews collateral valuations and general loan quality
  • Uses automated underwriting systems to review system-generated offers and override if needed
  • Inputs data and ensures accuracy for automated models
  • Recommends process improvements, system enhancements, automation, and workflow changes to increase efficiency and accuracy
  • Communicates with stakeholders
  • Collaborates with loan officers, processors, and customer service to provide guidance, resolve issues, and support positive client experiences
  • Suggests strategic and innovative strategies to achieve goals from the annual operating plan
  • Identifies inconsistencies or suspicious activity
  • Escalates high-risk applications
  • Prepares and analyzes reports on portfolio performance, delinquency trends, and loan quality to identify areas of improvement
  • Provides input on credit policy development and training initiatives to ensure consistent application of standards across consumer lending
  • Maintains clear, compliant records of decisions
  • Documents rationale for approval/denial decisions
  • Performs additional duties and responsibilities as directed by the Director of Consumer Lending
  • Abides by the current laws and organizational policies and procedures designed and implemented to promote an environment which is free of sexual harassment and other forms of illegal discriminatory behavior in the workplace
  • Cooperates with, participates in, and supports the adherence to all internal policies, procedures, and practices in support of risk management and overall safety and soundness and the bank's compliance with all regulatory requirements, e.g. Community Reinvestment Act (CRA), Equal Credit Opportunity Act, etc.
  • Responds to inquiries relating to his/her particular area, or to requests from customers, other personnel, etc., within given time frames and within established policy

Qualifications

  • A high school diploma or equivalent required
  • A B.A. degree in related field of study preferred
  • Specialized bank consumer lending education/training preferred
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience in accounting, lending, or related positions
  • Formal credit training program or certification preferred
  • Knowledge and experience working with a Retail Loan Origination System (LOS)
  • Proficient reading, writing, grammar, and mathematics skills
  • Proficient interpersonal relations and communicative skills
  • Knowledge of current loan servicing procedures, lending laws, and regulations
  • Sound judgment and risk assessment
  • Moderate computer skills
