About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Underground Utility Construction Foreman with a background in Civil/Public Works projects for projects located in Southern California. The ideal candidate has previous civil construction experience, takes initiative, is adaptable, and wants to grow in the construction field. As the Working Underground Utility Foreman, you will lead and manage a crew of skilled workers in the installation, repair, and/or maintenance of underground utilities, operate heavy equipment, and ensure work is completed safely, on time, and under budget.

Responsibilities

  • Install all types of sewer, water, fire, and storm drain systems
  • Study and fully understand blueprints, specifications, job site conditions, and P&L reports to plan effective construction procedures
  • Perform required takeoffs and calculations for purchasing and scheduling materials, equipment, subcontractors, and labor
  • Calculate and set proper grades and elevations (e.g., laser, flowliner)
  • Utilize P&L reports to record production and manage projects effectively
  • Complete and process accurate as-built drawings, daily logs, timecards, and field work orders on time
  • Complete and process required project documents, incident reports, and HR reports on time
  • Use smartphones, laptops, and software to communicate and share information
  • Interact with Superintendents and governing authorities to complete project requirements
  • Lead and coordinate crew to meet project objectives on time
  • Oversee and ensure field operations comply with company policies and OSHA safe practices
  • Maintain an orderly job site and keep crew truck clean and efficient
  • Identify and correct potential safety and operational deficiencies
  • Operate excavator, loader, and backhoe as required according to OSHA safe practices
  • Assist in the development and training of coworkers and support personnel in completing their Action Plan Goals
  • Conduct and manage team member development reviews to measure field personnel growth and progress
  • Support and communicate company goals and policy changes with field personnel
  • Demonstrate role model behaviors on ethics and integrity, promoting People, Principle, Purpose
  • Engage with management, team members, clients, and trade partners to build trustworthy, long-term, mutually profitable relationships
  • Operate heavy equipment (e.g., excavators, backhoes) to excavate trenches, lay pipes, and backfill excavations
  • Read and interpret blueprints, project specifications, and other technical documents
  • Supervise and train crew members, ensuring safe and efficient work
  • Coordinate equipment, crew, and material needs with the project management team
  • Manage project schedules to ensure work is completed on time and within budget
  • Provide complete and timely paperwork, reports, and status updates
  • Maintain company vehicles, tools, and equipment in clean condition and ensure all tools are accounted for daily
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • At least 6 years of experience as an Underground Utilities Foreman and 10 years of experience in the trade
  • Must be a working foreman capable of laying pipe
  • Experience operating heavy equipment (e.g., excavators, backhoes, trenchers)
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, project specifications, and technical documents
  • Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to manage project schedules and budgets
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
  • Ability to pass a drug test and background check

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to read, write, speak, and comprehend English
  • Adequate hearing to perform job duties in person
  • Able to communicate clearly in person and over the phone
  • Visual acuity sufficient to perform job duties
  • Frequent bending, reaching, standing, walking, squatting, sitting, pushing, and pulling heavy objects
  • Ability to work in sun, heat, and various climate conditions
  • Ability to work in dirty and dusty conditions
  • Manual dexterity to operate equipment and perform manual tasks
  • Able to lift a minimum of 75 pounds without assistance

Qualifications

  • Excellent interpersonal, leadership, and mentoring skills
  • Able to work nights, weekends, and overtime as required
  • Very detailed and organized
