Conservation Genetics Student Lab Assistant

The Shamblin lab at the University of Georgia’s Warnell School seeks student laboratory assistants to support wildlife and fisheries research through sample curation, DNA extractions, and data management for population genetic analyses.

About the role

This part-time (.50 FTE) student assistant position will work approximately 10 hours per week, assisting graduate students, the lab manager, and the principal investigator with:

• Sample tracking and processing of blood, eggshell, feather, skin, fin clips, eDNA filters, and swab samples
• DNA extractions for genotyping and sequencing of fish and wildlife species to inform conservation and management
• Data calling for microsatellite and sequencing projects
• Sample archiving and general laboratory maintenance

Candidates available for a minimum of 10 hours weekly are preferred.

Responsibilities

• Sample tracking and processing for DNA extractions (55% of time)
• DNA extractions and sample archiving (25% of time)
• Data calling and curation (10% of time)
• Dish washing and general lab maintenance (10% of time)

Requirements

• Current UGA student pursuing a BS degree in biology, genetics, marine science, or wildlife/fisheries (preferred)
• Previous laboratory experience is a plus but not required
• Ability to work well independently or in groups
• Strong attention to detail, especially for repetitive tasks
• Good organizational and interpersonal skills
• Ability to sit or stand at the bench for extended periods
• Occasional lifting of boxes up to 40 pounds
