Community Support Specialist position located at UH Behavioral Health in Kansas City, Missouri. Full-time role with a work schedule of Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM (40 hours per week).

As a Community Support Specialist, you’ll be on the front lines of client care, offering behavioral and socially rehabilitative services that help people lead healthier, more fulfilling lives. You’ll work closely with clients to understand their unique needs and provide the support they need in key areas such as emotional wellbeing, finances, social life, and career goals. You’ll also collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to ensure every client gets the comprehensive care they deserve.

Responsibilities

  • Provide life-changing support that helps clients regain control of their emotional, social, and financial wellbeing, building self-confidence and emotional resilience.
  • Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team to ensure holistic client care in a supportive, multicultural environment.
  • Help clients navigate life’s complexities by connecting them with local resources, support networks, and services (e.g., financial aid, community groups).
  • Design personalized treatment plans using creativity and compassion to help clients break through barriers.
  • Manage crises by providing tools and support to guide clients through tough moments with empathy and expertise.
  • Promote wellness across all aspects of clients’ lives—spiritually, emotionally, intellectually, and socially.
  • Advocate for clients facing legal, financial, or societal challenges to help them overcome obstacles and thrive.
  • Work in the community, meeting clients where they are—homes, centers, or drop-in spaces.
  • Maintain organized paperwork and compliance to ensure nothing slips through the cracks.

Requirements

  • A degree in Psychology, Social Work, or a similar field—or a combination of education and real-world experience.
  • Strong communication skills, active listening, and the ability to build trust and motivate others.
  • Leadership qualities, including supporting and uplifting your team.
  • Cultural awareness and commitment to creating inclusive spaces for people from all walks of life.
  • Adaptability to handle fast-changing situations, think on your feet, and solve problems creatively.
  • For roles involving driving, meet all safety and compliance standards.
  • Willingness to earn a Benefits Planning certification within a year (especially for Employment Services roles).
  • Flexibility to work in the community, including homes, centers, or drop-in spaces.
  • Commitment to continuous learning, from onboarding to leadership training.
