Community Service Officer I - Part-Time
Non-sworn uniformed position within the Police Department. This is an entry-level role that performs duties involving contact with the general public both by phone and in person. Assists and relieves law enforcement personnel in various functions that do not require being armed. Involves shift work, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Work may occur in all weather conditions, in the office, or in the holding facility in direct contact with arrested or detained persons.
Responsibilities
- Coordinates animal control, including responding to complaints, capture and impoundment of animals, and release of impounded animals. Monitors cases involving potentially dangerous dogs.
- Responds to a wide variety of calls for police services that do not require a sworn officer. Gathers information and evidence, prepares police-related reports, and analyzes situations to draw conclusive findings. Prepares for and testifies in court proceedings.
- Enforces motor vehicle parking ordinances and provides traffic control at accident scenes or as needed for crowd control.
- Enforces sign ordinance by removing unauthorized signs from the community.
- Assists disabled motorists and provides fingerprinting services to the public. Also provides fingerprinting and photography services for individuals detained in the Detention Center.
- Assists the Property Room Technician with custody, destruction, and auction of evidence and property.
- Performs crime scene security duties, inventories and maintains crime scene processing supplies.
- Performs delivery duties, including delivery of reports, evidence, property, and US Mail to various locations and agencies.
- Performs clerical tasks such as filing, data entry, retrieval, and answering telephones.
- Assists crime prevention services, including neighborhood watch, bicycle safety programs, crime prevention fairs, and community education programs.
- Operates and maintains a variety of vehicles assigned to the Police Department, including cleaning and assisting with fleet maintenance.
- Acts as primary volunteer for department trainings, including use of force, Crisis Intervention Team, and active shooter scenarios.
- Performs other duties consistent with the responsibilities of the position as assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Currently enrolled and pursuing an Associate's degree from a regionally accredited college and enrolled in a POST-accredited law enforcement program, making satisfactory progress toward obtaining POST licensure eligibility.
- Ability to obtain and retain knowledge of Federal and State statutes, City ordinances, and directives related to law enforcement procedures and police department operations.
- Valid driver's license and excellent driving record.
- Demonstrated proficiency in verbal and written communication skills using English.
- Ability to act courteously and professionally with colleagues and the public.
- Work history demonstrating trust, high integrity, and responsibility.
- Must pass a comprehensive background investigation, physical exam, and psychological evaluation.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
- Work may be performed in a standard office environment, outdoors, while operating a vehicle, or at other sites.
- Requires sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; stand or sit for prolonged periods; occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist.
- Must lift, carry, push, and/or pull objects weighing up to 50-80 pounds.
- Ability to hear and see sufficiently to read documents and direct traffic.
- Operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination, including use of a computer keyboard.
- Ability to verbally communicate to exchange information.
- Work flexible schedule, including shift work, nights, weekends, and holidays.
Pay
$21.05 - $23.75 hourly. Starting pay within the stated range is dependent on qualifications.
Schedule
Part-time, minimum 14 and maximum 28 hours per week. Involves shift work, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
