Community Service Officer
Job Summary
Community Service Officers are uniformed, non-sworn employees of the Police Department. They assist citizens, investigate incidents, enforce municipal ordinances, generate reports, document actions, and handle phone reports. They also direct traffic, transport vehicles, assist with school crossing guard duties, work with community groups, and transport dispatch tapes. The incumbent must write clear, concise, and accurate reports, have excellent communication and customer service skills, and be able to testify in court.
Responsibilities
- Assist citizens and investigate incidents such as lost/found property, non-injury traffic accidents, misdemeanor thefts, and work at the Front Desk of the Police Department.
- Enforce municipal ordinances on a limited basis, generate reports, document actions, and take phone reports.
- Direct traffic when necessary, transport vehicles for repair, assist with school crossing guard duties, work with community and neighborhood groups, and transport dispatch tapes.
- Write clear, concise, and accurate reports and have excellent communication and customer service skills in dealing with citizens, business owners, vendors, and coworkers.
- May be required to testify in court.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Must be 21 years of age by date of hire.
- Must possess a valid driver's license and a good driving record.
- One to Three (1-3) years' recent experience working with the public especially in difficult situations.
- Demonstrated excellent customer service skills.

- Computer skills, including the ability to utilize Microsoft Office programs (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.) and learn and experiment with new software and systems.

- Oral, written, and listening communication skills, including the ability to accurately interpret what others are saying and convey messages, information, concepts, and details accurately and clearly.
- Organizational skills, including the ability to set and meet goals and deadlines, manage appointments, create schedules, coordinate and facilitate meetings, and make decisions.
- Ability to work under pressure, manage multiple concurrent and competing tasks and responsibilities, and adapt to changing priorities while maintaining personal effectiveness.
- Ability to prioritize work, meet deadlines, and stay on task when completing special projects and daily assignments.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and reliable professional judgment, as well as collaboratively with a team to achieve desired results.
- Ability to establish and maintain partnerships with a variety of internal and external constituencies.
- Ability to communicate and work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and ages.
- Knowledge of customer service principles and best practices, including customer needs assessments, meeting quality service standards, and evaluating customer satisfaction.
- Knowledge of incident response and handling methodologies.

Testing
Selected applicants will be required to take a drug test, ErgoMed physical evaluation, polygraph, and thorough background investigation prior to employment.

Conditions of Employment
- Candidates must successfully complete all pre-employment screenings and employment eligibility verification.
