About the role
This is a hands-on Community Lead role at an early-stage ambient AI startup, reporting directly to the GM. You'll own the community end-to-end — from onboarding new users to turning power users into genuine evangelists — and serve as a critical bridge between the community and cross-functional product, R&D, and hardware teams.
Responsibilities
- Build and nurture an active community across Discord, X, Reddit, and other platforms where users naturally gather.
- Design and test concrete mechanics — recognition systems, referral programs, early access tiers — that convert power users into active advocates.
- Mobilize the community around high-impact moments such as product launches, user research initiatives, and marketing pushes.
- Gather and synthesize community feedback into actionable product signal for R&D and product teams.
- Plan and coordinate in-person events and activations that deepen community bonds.
- Collaborate across time zones with distributed hardware and supply-chain teams to keep community insights flowing into the roadmap.
- Define your own scope and make independent operational calls — there is no pre-built playbook.
Requirements
- 2+ years building and scaling an online community for a B2C or prosumer product into a measurable driver of engagement or retention.
- Proven track record designing and testing community mechanics that convert power users into advocates (not just hoping it happens organically).
- Experience mobilizing communities for specific campaigns and coordinating across Growth, Marketing, and Product teams.
- Hands-on platform management experience — Discord, Reddit, X/Twitter, or similar — including moderation, engagement strategy, and feedback collection.
- Comfortable operating independently, resolving community issues, and defining scope without pre-existing frameworks.
- Experience turning user feedback into actionable product insights and demonstrating community impact on retention or engagement metrics.
- Track record coordinating in-person community events or activations.
- Mandarin fluency or other multilingual capability is a strong plus given cross-timezone collaboration with international teams.
Location: Hybrid (3 days per week in office) in the San Francisco Bay Area. Visa sponsorship is not available.
