Job Summary

The communications coordinator is responsible for creating and implementing strategic communications plans that address key stakeholders of LAS data science programs and the college's Student Academic Affairs Office, including current and prospective students, faculty, staff, and alumni.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Content Creation

    • Generate ideas for and write accurate, engaging news and feature stories that support the units' priorities and college's brand.
    • Create website content that is accurate, concise, on-brand, and audience-focused.
    • Create and edit content for print and digital communications channels, such as newsletters and social media.
    • Pitch story ideas to the college and university communications teams.
    • Apply the college's brand and style guidelines to all content.
    • Maintain and update relevant statistics and pride points.
  • Planning and Evaluation

    • Work closely with leadership of the Office of Marketing and Communications to develop and implement strategic communications plans to address the goals, priorities, and key audiences of both the Student Academic Affairs Office and LAS data science programs.
    • Create project briefs and use other collaboration tools to define the goals and scope of projects and ensure that effective deliverables are produced.
    • Analyze and report on performance of communications tactics.
  • Marketing Work

    • Closely with the college’s social media manager to create content for channels with significant current student audiences, including Instagram and TikTok.
    • Serve as a brand steward by proactively reviewing and advising on materials produced across the units, ensuring alignment with college voice and visual identity.
    • Identify students with compelling stories that the college MarCom team can feature in blog posts, videos, and social media content that align with student recruitment goals.
    • Ensure student recruitment messaging within the units aligns with the college’s marketing strategy, brand standards, and campaigns.
    • Oversee timely review of marketing content by unit stakeholders and provide feedback on marketing projects as requested.
  • Collaboration and Communication

    • Build and maintain strong relationships with units’ leadership, staff, faculty, and students.
    • Work collaboratively with marketing and communications colleagues.
    • Work within and contribute to college project management systems.
    • Serve as a liaison between units and the college marketing and communications team.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, business administration, communications, public relations, or a closely related field.
  • One (1) year (12 months) of professional work experience in marketing, public relations, communications, brand management, or a related professional area.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience supporting student engagement, services, and/or programming within a higher education setting.

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5004 - Marketing Associate position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the deadline date. The budgeted salary range for the position is $50,000-$59,000. We strive to provide a competitive salary, considering factors such as available market data, internal equity, candidate experience and qualifications, collective bargaining agreements, and budget constraints. The final salary offer will be determined through a thorough assessment of these elements. Sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position. Hybrid work options may be available for this position after an initial on-site training period, with the ability to be on-site at the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign campus as needed per the University’s Workplace Flexibility policy.
