Effective July 1, 2025, the Georgia Department of Public Safety Motor Carrier Compliance Division (MCCD) has transitioned to Commercial Vehicle Enforcement (CVE). The advanced academy curriculum has been updated from Motor Carrier Officer (MCO) School to Commercial Vehicle Officer (CVO) School, consisting of seven weeks of advanced training followed by 12 weeks of field training.

Pay

  • CVO Cadet: $48,843
  • CVO1: $62,176 (upon completion of POST certification)
  • CVO2: $65,758 annually (NAS I A&B Training and 18 months service as a Compliance Officer I)
  • CVO3: $72,509 annually (Basic HAZMAT, Cargo Tank and Bulk Packaging Training and 4 years of total sworn service)
  • Senior CVO: $75,412
  • Master CVO: $78,461

  • Traditional pension plan: 1% per year of service
  • 401(k) plan with employer match:
    • 5% match through year 5
    • Increases 2% per year through year 10 (up to 15% total)
    • No requirement to increase employee contribution beyond 5% to receive full match

  • Veterans eligible for GI Bill benefits can receive 24 months of stipend pay in addition to DPS salary during academy and on-the-job training

Responsibilities

  • Under immediate supervision and within a progressive training capacity, acquire knowledge and experience to enforce State and Federal laws, rules, and regulations governing commercial motor vehicles and the transportation of hazardous materials
  • Operate and monitor electronic equipment at an inspection facility
  • Patrol highways and roadways to enforce Georgia’s traffic and criminal laws related to commercial vehicle and driver safety
  • Perform safety compliance inspections of commercial vehicles, drivers, and shipments of hazardous materials
  • Assist in the investigation of traffic crashes involving commercial motor vehicles
  • Utilize portable and permanent scales to screen commercial vehicles for violations of the state’s weight and dimension laws
  • Enforce state laws pertaining to High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) and High Occupancy Toll (HOT) Lanes in designated areas
  • Provide public outreach and education to motor carriers, drivers, and the motoring public on commercial vehicle safety

Requirements

Applicants eligible for the CVE Officer 1 must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be a certified peace (police) officer by the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (P.O.S.T.); or
  • Have been notified by P.O.S.T. that an Equivalency of Training (EOT) application has been approved prior to being hired by the DPS

Types of officers who may be eligible for the EOT process:

  • Eligible Federal Peace Officers who have graduated from the FLETC Uniformed Police Training Program
  • United States Military Police Officers (Army, Air Force, and Marines) who have graduated from their branch’s Basic Military Police Course and possess a general discharge under honorable conditions
  • Out-of-State Police Officers who have graduated from their state’s Uniform Police Academy and whose certification is valid and in good standing
  • Pre-Service Candidates and Inactive Registered Georgia Peace Officers actively employed in law enforcement or who have graduated from a basic law enforcement training course

Certification as a police officer in another state or with the federal government must be valid and in good standing. For EOT applicants whose EOT application is approved, the EOT Training requirements will be met prior to CVE School.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 24 months of verifiable road experience as a P.O.S.T. certified Peace Officer

Note: The Georgia Department of Public Safety (DPS) is unable to reimburse other law enforcement agencies in Georgia for training expenses as defined by 35-8-22. Currently certified peace officers in Georgia will not be hired by DPS until at least 24 months after the completion of basic mandate training. This does not apply to candidates who paid for their own mandate training (pre-service candidates) or who are currently certified in another state.

Cadets must also meet other requirements for certification as a peace officer set forth by the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (P.O.S.T.).

Physical Fitness Standards

The Physical Fitness Program is based on the Cooper's Institute recommendations for absolute standards (same job = same standard). These are the minimum fitness levels required regardless of age or gender.

  • Sit Ups: 30 in one minute (hands held over the ears, rest in the up position)
  • Push Ups: 21 in one minute (rest in the up position)
  • 1.5 Mile Run: Complete within 15 minutes and 34 seconds (15:34)

Medical Standards

  • Vision: Minimum 20/100 uncorrected in each eye, corrected to 20/40 or better in both eyes with glasses or contact lenses
  • Additional medical standards must be met prior to final offer of employment

Uniform & Appearance

The DPS Uniform and Appearance Policy allows applicants with some visible tattoos in a short sleeve uniform shirt to wear a long sleeve shirt. More information on the DPS Uniform and Appearance Policy and disqualifying tattoos/brands.
