Motor Carrier Enforcement Officer 1
About the Role
Join our Commerce and Compliance Division as a motor carrier enforcement officer where you will join a team of dedicated professionals that keep Oregon’s highways safe, efficient, and protected. You will play a vital role in safeguarding our roads and infrastructure by enforcing size, weight, registration, and safety laws for commercial vehicles. You’ll inspect vehicles, drivers, records, and cargo securement to ensure full compliance with state and federal regulations. Through a combination of enforcement, education, and regulatory action, you will help maintain the integrity of Oregon’s transportation system and support safe motor carrier operations across the state.
Each employee of the Oregon Department of Transportation in the Commerce and Compliance Division (CCD) must be aware of, and adhere to, OAR 740-020-0010 and ORS 823.007. Failure to follow applicable administrative rules and statutes may impact employment.
Responsibilities
- Monitor and maintain safe and efficient scale operations.
- Evaluate commercial motor vehicles as they enter weigh stations or portable scales for compliance and registration.
- Handle compliance situations with drivers and motor carrier officials who may be confused, reluctant to provide accurate information, or have language differences.
- Issue citations and determine fees accurately.
- Prepare written reports and provide expert testimony when representing ODOT in court cases concerning disputed citations.
- Prepare written reports for other ODOT offices as needed.
- Provide technical training on laws, rules, and regulations pertaining to safety, size, weight, tax, and registration.
- Monitor weigh station bypass routes by driving to remote locations in state vehicles to identify vehicles bypassing without authorization.
Flexible work schedules are required to ensure 24/7 coverage. Travel throughout the state is required with some overnight stays. Work is conducted in all types of weather conditions and requires the ability to bend, stoop, climb, and crawl. Must be able to lift and move 35-pound portable scales.
Requirements
- Two years of public contact/customer service experience which involved dealing with the public in person or by phone, providing information about services/programs, or explaining and/or applying laws, rules, regulations/procedures.
- Experience or training using computers to retrieve and input data.
- Completion of an associate's degree will substitute for one year of the public contact experience.
- Driving is an essential function of this position. You must have a valid driver license and an acceptable driving record. Your license does not have to be issued in Oregon to be considered.

- General knowledge of State or Federal laws, rules, and regulations.
- Demonstrated ability to remain calm and professional in difficult or escalated situations.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to accurately reply to inquiries regarding laws, policies, or procedures.
- Ability to work collaboratively with internal and external partners.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and make sound judgment calls based on established procedures.

Salary will be determined through an equal pay assessment using the information provided in your application materials. If you are already a participating PERS member or become PERS eligible, the salary range will increase by 6.95%.

Special Conditions
- A computer assessment and typing test will be administered at the time of interview for selected candidates.
