Motor Carrier Enforcement Officer 1
Join the Oregon Department of Transportation’s Commerce and Compliance Division as a motor carrier enforcement officer in Eastern Oregon. In this role, you will enforce size, weight, registration, and safety laws for commercial vehicles, inspecting vehicles, drivers, records, and cargo securement to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations. Through enforcement, education, and regulatory action, you will help maintain Oregon’s transportation system and support safe motor carrier operations.

Responsibilities
- Monitor and maintain safe and efficient scale operations.
- Evaluate commercial motor vehicles for compliance and registration at weigh stations or portable scales.
- Handle compliance situations with drivers and motor carrier officials, including those who may be confused, reluctant to provide information, or have language differences.
- Issue citations and calculate fees accurately.
- Prepare written reports and provide expert testimony in court for disputed citations.
- Prepare reports for other ODOT offices as needed.
- Provide technical training on laws, rules, and regulations related to safety, size, weight, tax, and registration.
- Monitor weigh station bypass routes by driving to remote locations to identify unauthorized bypasses.
- Work flexible schedules to ensure 24/7 coverage, including some overnight travel.
- Work in all weather conditions, requiring bending, stooping, climbing, and crawling.
- Lift and move 35-pound portable scales.
Requirements
- Two years of public contact/customer service experience involving in-person or phone interactions, providing information about services/programs, or explaining and applying laws, rules, regulations, or procedures.
- Experience or training using computers to retrieve and input data.
- An associate’s degree may substitute for one year of public contact experience.
- A valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record (pre-employment driving record check required).
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated ability to remain calm and professional in difficult or escalated situations.
- Experience evaluating facts to determine compliance with program guidelines or regulations.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to accurately reply to inquiries regarding laws, policies, or procedures.
- Ability to make effective oral presentations on technical subject matter.
- Ability to work collaboratively with internal and external partners.

Pay
$4,519 – $6,276 per month (non-PERS). If you are a PERS member or become eligible, the salary range increases by 6.95%.
