About the role
SJS Industrial, a veteran-owned media blasting, industrial painting, powder coating, and light fabrication shop in Virginia Beach, VA, serving military and maritime customers, is seeking a full-time professional, booth-experienced painter. This position starts on first shift (Monday–Friday, 12:30 PM–9:00 PM) and will transition to second shift. Occasional Saturday or evening shifts may be required for tight-deadline projects, but the primary schedule is a steady Monday–Friday, 40-hour work week with possible overtime.
Pay
The pay range for this position is $20–$28 per hour, with compensation based on experience and an in-person test.

Responsibilities
- Start up and shut down paint booths; ensure proper operation and curing cycles.
- Mix paint in accordance with standards, travelers, and directions.
- Inspect applicator guns, air compressors/pumps, and related tools and equipment at the start of each shift to ensure safety and functionality.
- Coordinate with maintenance technicians to schedule regular preventative maintenance and maximize booth and equipment uptime.
- Apply coatings to objects at the correct mil thickness; monitor equipment, booth gauges, and control panels for optimal coating.
- Provide regular updates to senior personnel on booths, ovens, equipment status, and emergent issues.
- Suggest improvements to leadership regarding speed, quality, or production efficiency.
- Perform shift closeout activities including cleanup, tool return, and general housekeeping.
- Complete other production-related tasks as assigned by the Production Manager, coatings supervisor, or company officers.
Requirements
- Ability to pass an in-person spray paint performance test.
- Solid understanding of paint types and mixing procedures.
- Strong understanding of paint gun maintenance.
- Demonstrated career experience in wet spray painting within an industrial or maritime/marine environment.
- C12 certification with industrial wet spray painting experience is a major plus.
- Understanding of the basic physical properties and mechanics of spray painting for metals.
- Strong communication skills for safety coordination, hazard communication, and accurate completion of technical paperwork.
- Physical ability to see and hear clearly, stand, walk, bend, crouch, and lift/carry objects up to 30 pounds.
- Capable of spending the majority of each shift standing, moving, or walking.
- U.S. citizenship.
- Ability to pass a drug test and background check.
