About the role
Under minimum supervision, performs diagnostic and service work on commercial (rooftop) HVAC equipment and accessories. Communicates with commercial customers to answer questions, resolve problems, and ensure complete customer satisfaction. Works under the direction of the Field Supervisor or Branch Manager.
Responsibilities
- Perform commercial (rooftop) service and maintenance calls, following company and customer safety protocols.
- Analyze, diagnose, and resolve customer problems in a courteous, professional, timely, and accurate manner.
- Service commercial heating, air conditioning, boilers, ventilation, and refrigeration equipment, as well as accessories.
- Inspect equipment to identify potential problems to prevent premature and unexpected breakdowns or callbacks.
- Complete routine maintenance and equipment cleaning as needed or required.
- Deliver and remove parts and equipment needed to complete service work.
- Record all required information on customer calls using a hand-held device.
- Complete all forms and paperwork in a neat, timely, complete, and accurate manner.
- Communicate with dispatch to provide accurate status reports of activities and availability.
- Deliver excellent customer service and sustain high levels of customer satisfaction.
- Promote products and services to customers and report replacement product sales leads to the Lead Coordinator.
- Ensure proper use, maintenance, and accounting of company property, vehicles, and tools.
- Represent the company professionally, honestly, and ethically in all business matters and activities.
- Ensure the company vehicle is properly stocked, return defective warranty parts to the branch, and replenish vehicle stock as needed.
- Train other commercial service/maintenance/install technicians, as assigned.
- Perform similar or other duties as needed or assigned.
- Maintain regular, reliable attendance.
Health & Safety Responsibilities
- Report any unsafe acts, conditions, or hazards to a direct supervisor/manager immediately.
- Report any contravention of legislation or company policy, procedure, or program to a direct supervisor/manager immediately.
- Correct substandard acts or conditions within area of control.
- Use and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as prescribed by company programs or procedures.
- Never remove or render ineffective any safety guards, devices, or clothing prescribed to be in place or worn.
- Comply with general rules as prescribed by company programs or procedures.
- Operate devices or equipment as prescribed by company programs or procedures.
- Participate in safety initiatives, teams, or committees.
- Report all injuries or incidents as prescribed by company programs or procedures immediately.
- Provide input on developing safety initiatives and plans to eliminate exposures that could cause accidents.
- Do not perform acts that may endanger the safety or wellbeing of others.
- Do not engage in pranks, contests, or rough boisterous behavior.
- Work in compliance with applicable legislative requirements.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED with additional training and 3+ years’ experience in HVAC with technical training certification.
- Must possess all valid licensing or certification as required by federal, state, provincial, or local governmental laws or regulations for the geographical work area.
- 3+ years of experience servicing commercial (rooftop) heating, air conditioning, boilers, ventilation equipment, and related accessories.
- Proficient mechanical aptitude and ability to operate all necessary tools and equipment.
- Proficient at reading wiring diagrams and troubleshooting problems with electrical, refrigerant, and duct systems on commercial HVAC equipment.
- Proficient at properly starting up and balancing airflow on all commercial systems with little or no supervision.
- Proficient at installing basic duct fittings.
- Skilled at troubleshooting and repairing refrigeration systems, hot water systems, steam boiler systems, and related commercial equipment with little or no supervision.
- Effective communication skills to resolve customer issues, complaints, or concerns.
- Effective and efficient time-management and organizational skills.
- Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
- Available to work flexible hours and on-call shifts as needed.
- Ability to stand, walk, climb ladders, and maneuver in attics, basements, and crawl spaces to access HVAC units.
- Ability to continually climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or crawl.
- Ability to work in a variety of environmental conditions, including hot, cold, outdoor, indoor, dry, humid, slippery surfaces, heights, and congested areas.
- Ability to safely climb 300lb load capacity rated ladders with a 30lb tool belt.
- Natural or corrected vision to see and focus for close, distance, peripheral vision with normal depth perception.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds.
Minimum Experience: 4+ years
Minimum Education: High School Diploma/GED
