About the role

The Fall Innovation & AI Interns will support the development of an enterprise AI-powered Appeals & Grievances solution in partnership with the Advocacy organization. This initiative aims to improve operational efficiency, reduce administrative burden, accelerate decision-making, and scale AI capabilities across core healthcare operations. The project focuses on transforming a highly manual, document-intensive workflow into a streamlined, AI-assisted process supporting intake, case preparation, clinical review, decision support, and member communications.

Current work by the Summer 2026 Innovation & AI cohort has identified opportunities to enhance case review and decision support, with expansion into upstream intake, routing, case preparation, and downstream notification workflows. Interns will work with a mentor on key strategic projects, deliver a presentation at the completion of the internship, and may perform a broad range of technical or non-technical business-related tasks based on business needs and qualifications.

Responsibilities

  • Support the development of an AI-powered Appeals & Grievances solution.
  • Work with a mentor on strategic projects and varying assignments based on business needs and qualifications.
  • Perform technical and/or non-technical tasks across a range of business-related projects.
  • Create and deliver a presentation at the completion of the internship.
  • Adhere to company mission, values, and code of conduct.

  • Demonstrate high standards of integrity and uphold company values.
  • Perform other functions as assigned by management.

Requirements

  • High school diploma with proof of continuous college enrollment in a full-time undergraduate or graduate degree program.
  • Good academic standing.
  • Regular and reliable attendance.
  • Ability to work while sitting and/or standing at a workstation for three or more hours at a time.
  • Ability to travel across the Health Plan service region for meetings and/or trainings as needed.

Qualifications

Desired majors include Software Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Data Science, or similar degree programs.

  • Preferred skills or experience with Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and/or Databricks.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interface with technical and non-technical audiences at all levels.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, changing environment and deliver high-quality work.
  • Strong teamwork skills and ability to establish good working relationships with peers.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize tasks, and maintain strong attention to detail.
  • Experience using a desktop computer in a professional environment and proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proactive approach to work, displaying creativity and flexibility.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement of skills and team functioning.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and on intra- and inter-departmental teams.

Pay

Compensation ranges:

  • Level I: $18.00 – $20.00 per hour
  • Level II: $21.00 – $23.00 per hour

Actual salary will vary based on factors including budget, prior experience, knowledge, skill, education, and internal equity.
