The Undeclared and Academic Advising Center (UAAC) within the Division of Academic Affairs supports all undergraduate students at Cal State Fullerton (CSUF). The Academic Advising mission is to work in a collaborative partnership with students, where the advisor and student are equally invested in the educational process and holistic development of the student. The ideal candidate should have a positive attitude and an active, energetic mind characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to inclusivity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness.
Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive, relational, and holistic academic advising to undergraduate students, supporting their success from matriculation through graduation.
- Create and promote a positive university experience for each student, aligning with Cal State Fullerton’s commitment to student success.
- Cultivate a strong understanding of student development, support, and success to effectively communicate in a rapidly changing environment.
- Leverage holistic academic advising strategies to assist students with diverse experiences and deliver various academic advising programs.
- Advocate for students’ advising needs to support their enrollment, engagement, and completion of educational goals.
- Serve as a member of the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (NSM) academic advising team, collaborating with faculty and chairs on inclusive and equitable practices for student success.
- Engage in professional development and lifelong learning of academic advising tools, technologies, and best practices.
- Establish working relationships with academic departments, colleges, university services, and advising teams to create a seamless advising environment.
- Identify core challenges, propose solutions, and communicate effectively with staff, students, and academic leaders.
- Develop and implement campaigns to increase retention, reduce equity gaps, and facilitate progress toward degree completion.
- Deliver compassionate assistance to students on academic notice or facing academic and personal challenges using basic interviewing and counseling techniques.
- Access and maintain a student tracking database and utilize campus advising and data analytic tools to support advising and outreach efforts.
- Report on students supported, challenges experienced, and overall outcomes.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from an accredited four-year college or university in behavioral sciences, public administration, business administration, or a job-related field.
- Two years of professional experience in student services or a related field. A master’s degree in a job-related field may substitute for one year of professional experience.
- Additional specialized and relevant experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
- General knowledge of organizational management, research, and interview techniques.
- Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations, obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews, and advise students individually and in groups on complex matters.
- Ability to reason logically, use initiative in planning work assignments, and implement long-range program improvements.
- Ability to plan, develop, coordinate, supervise, and organize programs and activities.
- Ability to interact with a diverse student population, faculty, staff, and the public.
- Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as the ability to acquire knowledge of campus procedures and overall organization.
- A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily for employment.
- A valid California driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications
- Competence in following all university policies, procedures, and guidelines, including safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination.
- Ability to collect, compile, analyze, and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data.
- Proficiency in using common office suites (e.g., Office365).
- Proficiency in using relevant student engagement platforms and tools (e.g., Navigate, EAB Navigate, Ellucian Degree Audit).
Pay
Classification Range: $5,083 - $7,228 per month. Hiring range depending on qualifications, not anticipated to exceed $5,083 - $5,619 per month.
Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM.
