About the role
The Collections Specialist focuses on consumer loans, personal lines of credit (PLOCs), and credit cards, handling both early and late-stage collections. This role supports the Collections team by delivering exceptional service to members and teammates, assisting with department workflow, and acting as a point of contact for specific areas within Collections.
Responsibilities
- Act as a self-starter, motivated to develop thorough cross-training in multiple areas of Collections.
- Work effectively in a team environment.
- Serve as a liaison with members and outside agencies for questions or issues related to past-due loans or negative balance accounts, taking appropriate action with management approval.
- Document member contacts accurately and completely to ensure continuity and protection for OnPoint.
- Complete assignments and projects with general supervision and within tight deadlines.
- Analyze and apply sound collection techniques to reduce delinquencies and negative account balances.
- Maintain accurate records of collection efforts by documenting actions in collection systems.
- Exercise good judgment, initiative, and tact during communication with members, outside agencies, and internal employees.
- Initiate operational efficiencies and contribute to a sense of teamwork within the department.
- Comply with all security, confidentiality, and applicable regulations.
- Manage time and resources to ensure work is completed accurately and on schedule.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Minimum of one year of successful work experience in a financial institution.
- Knowledge of FDCPA guidelines strongly desired.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Prior collections experience preferred.
Skills
- Professional, high-quality service to members.
- Knowledge of laws and regulations within the collections field.
- Understanding of fiduciary responsibilities and membership requirements for auditing documentation.
- Effective verbal and written communication, including the ability to document procedures.
- Ability to independently identify, analyze, and resolve member issues.
- Understanding of credit union operations, procedures, and applicable regulations.
- Highly organized with the ability to effectively multi-task.
