About the role
Assists the store manager in ensuring the store operates at company standards, providing positive earnings for the company. Directly supervises sales workers and may perform management functions such as purchasing, budgeting, accounting, and personnel work, in addition to supervisory duties. Directs effective safety, security, and sanitation programs in compliance with company policy and procedure. Provides supportive leadership to all store employees.
Responsibilities
- Provide customer service by greeting and assisting customers and responding to inquiries and complaints.
- Monitor sales activities to ensure customers receive satisfactory service and quality goods.
- Assign employees to specific duties and supervise employees engaged in sales, inventory-taking, reconciling cash receipts, or performing customer services.
- Inventory stock and reorder when inventory drops to a specified level; keep records of purchases, sales, and requisitions.
- Enforce safety, health, and security rules; examine products for resale or storage to assess condition.
- Recruit, interview, hire, train, evaluate, promote, demote, and terminate store employees as necessary.
- Ensure all employees know, understand, and follow company policies and standards; measure performance and take corrective action.
- Instruct staff on handling difficult sales and assure productivity through example and leadership.
- Achieve sales and profit objectives; examine merchandise to ensure correct pricing, display, and functionality.
- Plan, develop, and maintain work schedules, records of employees' work schedules, timecards, and other necessary records.
- Organize, calculate, and accurately enter daily sales information and send to the corporate office.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of local competition and confer with company officials to develop methods to increase sales and promote business.
- Control store expenses, plan budgets, and authorize payments and merchandise returns.
- Provide adequate supervision to reduce loss due to theft; maintain and preserve company property.
- Prevent overstocks and out-of-stocks through correct product ordering; develop a favorable customer image through cleanliness, attractiveness, and employee conduct.
- Review and monitor scheduled shift hours; abide by all city, county, state, and federal regulations.
- Assist in all areas needing attention or assign tasks to appropriate personnel.
- Record all sales at the time of purchase; accurately record markups, markdowns, spoilage, and store use of merchandise.
- Verify all money from the previous day, calculate daily deposits, and sign off on office counts.
- Maintain a bad check log to ensure recovery of lost money due to returned checks.
- Prepare end-of-week reports accurately or ensure they are completed by trained employees.
- Record all hours worked on the computer and timecard report; verify and close out payroll.
- Train all new employees on each shift; maintain warning notices reflecting employee performance records.
- Advise supervisor of personnel situations or policy violations negatively affecting store operations.
- Check all equipment for proper working conditions; control payroll within budget guidelines.
- Enforce correct vendor check-in procedures within company guidelines.
- Maintain a low cash drawer and utilize the safe as instructed; open and close the store.
- Complete shift-checkout reports at appropriate times; notify supervisor if bank deposits are not made daily.
- Share responsibility for controlling store inventory; order and maintain merchandise to prevent out-of-stocks.
- Build and maintain sellable displays; prepare and maintain perishable foods according to company standards.
- Maintain coolers, shelves, and displays by keeping them full and fronted; clean and maintain store equipment.
- Perform other job-related tasks as requested by management; observe management schedule by opening and closing the store on time.
Qualifications
- High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED).
- One to two years of related experience.
