About the role

Set up and operate machine shop equipment, including manual Vertical Mills, Lathes, Drills, with CNC experience. Operate all equipment by following safety rules, including PPE, machine guarding, hazard communications, etc. Study blueprints, sketches, drawings, or specifications to determine dimensions and tolerances, sequence of operations, and setup requirements. Perform a wide range of turning, facing, chamfering, cutting off, and similar machining operations on various materials. Measure, mark, and scribe dimensions and reference points on material or workpiece as guides for subsequent machining. Select, align, and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, etc. Calculate and set controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, depth, and angle of cut. Start and observe machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and adjust machine controls or control media as required. Verify conformance of finished workpiece to specifications. Set up and operate machine on trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings. Keep work area clean and orderly. Report all unusual conditions to supervisor.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Study blue prints, sketches, drawings, or specifications to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished workpiece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.
  • Perform a wide range of turning, facing, chamfering, cutting off, and similar machining operations, on a variety of castings, parts, special orders, rework, re-machining, etc. of various materials.
  • Measure, mark, and scribe dimensions and reference points on material or workpiece as guides for subsequent machining.
  • Select, align, and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, etc.
  • Calculate and set controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, depth, and angle of cut.
  • Start and observe machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and adjust machine controls or control media as required.
  • Verify conformance of finished workpiece to specifications.
  • Set up and operate machine on trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings.
  • Keep work area clean and orderly.
  • Report all unusual conditions to supervisor.

Position Requirements

  • Educational & Experience: High School Diploma and up to 2 – 5 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Mental Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Reasoning Abilities: Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Physical Demands: Regularly stand and use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls. Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and pull up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Work Environment: Regularly works near moving mechanical parts. Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate depending on the shop workload.
