General Function

Working as part of a healthcare team, the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) provides quality nursing care to residents and assists with activities of daily living. The CNA anticipates residents’ needs to create a safe environment that promotes dignity, respect, and independence.

Responsibilities

  • Provide quality nursing care that upholds residents’ rights, dignity, freedom of choice, and individuality.
  • Know and follow each resident’s individualized care plan; take and accurately document vital signs; report unusual behaviors or medical conditions promptly.
  • Administer assigned treatments and document them accurately.
  • Assist residents with grooming, bathing, oral hygiene, feeding, incontinent care, toileting, colostomy care, prosthetic appliances, transferring, ambulation, range of motion, communication, and other needs while encouraging independence.
  • Maintain a neat, clean environment (making beds, handling clothing, emptying wastebaskets, cleaning floors, bathrooms, and work areas) and report any environmental deficiencies.
  • Observe and promptly report changes in residents’ condition or behavior to the supervisor.
  • Answer call bells promptly and courteously, preserving residents’ comfort, privacy, and dignity.
  • Lift, move, and transport residents using proper body mechanics or lifting devices.
  • Communicate professionally and tactfully with residents, families, visitors, peers, and supervisors.
  • Complete CNA records documenting care provided in accordance with facility policies.
  • Follow County safety policies and infection‑control procedures, including hand washing, glove use, and proper disposal of soiled materials.
  • Assist and escort residents to appointments and activities as required.
  • Supervise dining room during meals and reinforce good eating and hygiene habits.
  • Understand and uphold residents’ rights, including proper use of restraints and reporting any abuse, neglect, or misconduct.
  • Maintain current CNA certification, participate in in‑service and continuing‑education trainings, and provide documentation of training activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Current Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification and ability to maintain it.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Basic everyday living skills: ability to read, write legibly, perform basic arithmetic, and spell correctly to follow directions, orders, care plans, and documentation.
  • Effective verbal communication skills.
  • Familiarity with basic equipment such as EZ stand, EZ lift, gait belt, walker, wheelchair, sensor pad alarms, clip alarms, anti‑rollback devices, seatbelts, low beds, personal care items, scales, blood pressure cuff, thermometer, telephone, and stethoscope.
